GM, Hyundai: A New Alliance Takes Shape

Auto giants aim to leverage strengths for improved efficiency and competitiveness

  • GM and Hyundai to explore joint product development, manufacturing, and clean-energy technologies to improve industry competitiveness.

  • Collaboration aims to reduce costs and accelerate delivery of diverse vehicles and technologies to consumers.

  • Partnership could lead to joint procurement for battery materials, steel, and components, enhancing supply chain efficiency.

General Motors (GM) and Hyundai Motor Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential collaboration on vehicle development and clean-energy technologies. The non-binding agreement, announced on September 12, 2024, aims to leverage the strengths of both companies to improve efficiency and competitiveness in the automotive industry.

The MoU outlines several key areas for potential cooperation. These include joint product development and manufacturing, focusing on the co-development and production of passenger and commercial vehicles. The companies will explore opportunities in internal combustion engines, clean-energy, electric, and hydrogen technologies.

Another area of interest is the supply chain, with the possibility of joint procurement for battery raw materials, steel, and related components. The collaboration aims to reduce costs and accelerate the delivery of a wider range of vehicles and technologies to consumers.

Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO, stated, “GM and Hyundai have complementary strengths and talented teams. Our goal is to unlock the scale and creativity of both companies to deliver even more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently.”

Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair, commented on the partnership’s potential, saying, “This partnership will enable Hyundai Motor and GM to evaluate opportunities to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, as well as drive cost efficiencies and provide stronger customer value through our combined expertise and innovative technologies.”

Following the signing of the MoU, both companies will immediately begin assessing opportunities for collaboration. The next steps involve exploring specific projects and negotiating the terms of potential binding agreements.

GM and Hyundai are both major players in the global automotive market. GM has been focusing on electric vehicle technology and autonomous driving systems, while Hyundai has been expanding its electric vehicle lineup and investing in hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The automotive industry has seen several collaborations between major manufacturers in recent years, as companies seek to share the costs and risks associated with developing new technologies and meeting stringent emissions regulations.

The companies have not provided specific timelines for when binding agreements might be reached or when joint projects could potentially begin.
