This subcompact SUV would be based on the Chevy Trailblazer.
This small SUV segment is growing quickly in North America.
The unnamed SUV would slot below the compact Terrain.
Rumours of a small GMC SUV have circulated for many years. Going as far back as 2010, GMC was dabbling with this idea when it revealed the Granite Concept at that year’s Detroit Auto Show. In early 2019, GMC trademarked the “Granite” name again, further fuelling the gossip.
And we’re at it again. Sources have told gmauthority.com that the idea is back on the table and possibly closer than ever to becoming a reality. GM already has a number of offerings in the subcompact segment, from the Chevrolet Trax, all-new 2021 Trailblazer, Buick Encore and Encore GX. Given the projected continued growth in the segment for both the US and Canada, the time might be ripe for GMC to finally get its own.
The GMC Granite, or Graphyte (both names trademarked by GM) would be based on the recent Trailblazer and Encore GX but it would be “highly differentiated” from the Chevrolet and Buick vehicles. As well, it will physically have nothing to do with the Granite Concept shown here.
If and when the new GMC small SUV gets the green light, bringing it to market should not take too long.
