Infiniti Now Only Sells SUVs After Saying Goodbye to the Q50

The Infiniti Q50 will retire after the 2024 model year, leaving the brand with only SUVs to sell for the first time in its history.

  • The Q50 arrived on the market in its current generation in 2013, replacing the G37.

  • It won’t be replaced in the near future, marking the end of Infiniti-branded sedans.

  • The premium automaker will only sell the QX50, QX55, QX60, and QX80 SUVs for the 2025 model year.

By abandoning the Q50 at the end of the 2024 model year, Infiniti will become an SUV only brand, like many have done before.

Indeed, the dwindling popularity of sedans in favour of SUVs has prompted many automakers to retire their sedans, coupes and wagons over the last few years, such as Ford, Chevrolet, and Buick, to name a few.

While the declining sales of sedans as a whole undoubtedly played a part in Infiniti’s decision, it is not the only factor to blame.

Indeed, the company hasn’t invested much in the Q50 since it was launched in 2013 for the following model year, not even granting it a major refresh in ten years.

This doesn’t make the 2024 Q50 a bad car in itself, but when considering that some competitors have had two complete overhauls during the same period, it is easy to see why more and more buyers have been looking elsewhere.

In the United States, Infiniti only sold 1,442 units of the Q50 during the second quarter of 2024, which is 21% less than during the same period in 2023.

The Q50, a slightly more luxurious version of the Japanese market Nissan Skyline, was the first model to introduce the brand’s new naming strategy when it replaced the G37, which was the brand’s smallest four-door car.

The G Line, and therefore the Q50, can trace its origin all the way back to the G20 which was launched in late 1990 to act as the brand’s entry-level model.

With the death of the Q50, the new entry-level model in the lineup in 2025 is the QX50 compact SUV.

Other models that will be found in Infiniti showrooms in the coming months are the QX55, a coupe-like version of the QX50, the QX60, a more luxurious version of the Nissan Pathfinder, and the QX80, a large body-on-frame SUV which enters an entirely new generation in 2025.

Infiniti is reportedly working on two upcoming electric vehicles, one of which could be a fastback model which would bring cars back to the brand, but we don’t know when to expect these EVs.

In the meantime, the company will introduce the QX65, which will be a coupe-like version of the QX60 that follows the same formula as the QX55.
