– Kia will offer free NACS adapters to 2024 and 2025 EV6 and EV9 customers by early 2025.
– Access to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers will be available to Kia EV owners nationwide.
– Three types of NACS adapters will support flexible charging across NACS, CCS, and Level 2 networks.
Kia America announced late last year that it was going to offer North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its EV drivers. Now, we’ve learned that EV6 and EV9 vehicles will start in early 2025. This will dramatically increase charging accessibility for Kia electric vehicle (EV) owners, granting them access to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers across the United States, plus nearly 2,000 more in Canada.
The company will provide NACS adapters to owners of 2024 and 2025 Kia EV6 and EV9 models free of charge, while earlier EV6, EV9, and Niro EV customers will have the option to purchase them from authorized Kia dealers. Delivery of the free adapters is anticipated for early 2025, with full access to the NACS charging network expected to roll out by January 15, 2025.
Genesis, Kia, and Hyundai Adopt the North American Charging Standard
Like all other automakers, Kia’s decision to offer NACS adapters will significantly expand the charging options available to its EV drivers. According to Kia America, the introduction of these adapters will increase the number of DC fast chargers accessible to Kia EV owners by over 83%. Customers will be able to utilize a broader network of charging stations, improving convenience for long-distance travel and daily use.
Owners of 2024 and 2025 EV6 and EV9 models will receive the NACS adapter at no cost, while those with earlier models will need to purchase the device from a dealership at a later date.
Adapter Options and Functionality
Kia will offer three types of NACS adapters to support a variety of charging needs. These include:
– NACS to CCS1: Allows Kia EVs to use NACS DC fast chargers.
– CCS1 to NACS: Enables NACS-equipped Kia vehicles to charge on CCS DC chargers.
– J1772 to NACS: Supports AC charging on Level 2 chargers.
This range of adapters will provide flexibility for Kia EV drivers, allowing them to charge across multiple platforms.
Kia will also enhance its charging experience through its Kia Access app. With a scheduled update in early 2025, Kia EV owners will be able to search for available charging stations, navigate to them, and pay for charging through the app. The vehicle’s infotainment system will also integrate these features, providing real-time updates on charger availability, status, and pricing.
A vehicle software upgrade will be necessary to support these new functionalities so that Kia drivers can seamlessly access and utilize the expanded charging network.
