The race for more SUVs will spawn a new subcompact SUV for Kia. Unlike most others in the segment, it will offer AWD.
We lost track of how many new crossovers and SUVs Hyundai and Kia have launched in the last 2 years but there are very many of them. And according to Kia, there are more coming our way before long. The next one from Kia will be of the tiny type.
Quite unlike the Kia Telluride, which is the brand’s flagship large 3-row SUV, the as-of-yet unnamed mini-ute will slot in the line-up at the very other end. Much like the all-new Hyundai Venue, the Kia will serve as the gateway to the brand’s growing collection of “trucks” with one big difference.
Unlike the Venue, the Kia Soul and the Nissan Kicks, Kia’s vehicle will offer AWD as an option. Michael Cole, chief operating officer-Kia Motors America, recently spoke to WardsAuto saying that such a vehicle is in the company’s immediate future plans.
Sales in the segment last year demonstrated that AWD can be a key factor in sales success, although it is not a guarantee. The Kia Soul has never offered AWD but continues to be a popular crossover-cum-car in the segment. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-3, which can be spec’d with AWD, is not quite the success it could be.
There’s no official timeline set for the launch of this small SUV however we think it may arrive before the end of the year.
