Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé and GLS 63: The Biturbo V8 Reinvents Itself to Last

The Affalterbach manufacturer unveils a thoroughly revised version of its two high-performance SUVs. On the agenda: a modernised biturbo V8 engine, mild electrification, and a top-to-bottom design overhaul — without ever compromising the soul that defines the brand’s reputation.

  • The 4.0-litre M177 EVO biturbo V8 delivers 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system
  • A new flat-plane crankshaft that sharpens throttle response and prepares the engine for upcoming global emissions regulations
  • AMG design elements are found throughout both body styles.
  • Adaptive air suspension capable of transitioning from off-road to track driving in a matter of seconds

An Iconic Engine Reinvented, Not Abandoned

It’s the question every engine enthusiast had been asking: what future awaits the V8 in the face of tightening environmental standards? Mercedes-AMG answers without ambiguity. Rather than discarding the M177, the engineers in Affalterbach rethought it from the ground up to secure both its commercial and regulatory longevity.

Mercedes-AMG M177 EVO

Typically reserved for the racetrack, the flat-plane crankshaft is a first for this engine family. It reduces rotating masses, improves rev response, and sharpens throttle precision. Add to that an optimised injection system, redesigned intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, and improvements to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing. The package is now rounded out by a particulate filter fitted as standard worldwide, enabling the engine to meet the most stringent current emissions standards.

The figures remain impressive: 603 horsepower, and a peak torque of 627 lb-ft available between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The 0–100 km/h sprint is dispatched in 3.9 seconds for the GLE 63 S and 4.2 seconds for the GLS 63, before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 280 km/h.

Michael Schiebe, membre du directoire de Mercedes-Benz Group AG et président du directoire de Mercedes-AMG GmbH se montre très fier : “Our V8 is a central component of our performance DNA and the ideal heart for the new GLE 63 S and GLS 63. With the new M177 EVO generation, we have fundamentally revised the powertrain and secured its presence in our lineup for the long term. The result is an engine that impresses with agile response, strong performance and a pronounced appetite for revs — while at the same time meeting increasingly demanding regulations worldwide.”

Electrification in Service of Character

Without breaking from the brand’s spirit while meeting contemporary demands, AMG integrates an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) 2.0 paired with a 48-volt electrical system. This mild-hybrid module adds 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of additional torque, boosting low-rpm torque availability — precisely where a turbo alone can still lag slightly. The ISG also handles energy recuperation during braking and enables smoother engine restarts.

The AMG Performance exhaust has been completely redesigned. Thanks to electronically controlled valves, the driver can tune the V8’s voice to suit the mood: restrained in Comfort mode, frankly theatrical in Sport+, with ignition cut-outs thrown in for good measure.

A Dynamic Architecture Built for Any Surface

Beneath the revised bodywork, the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension — with air springs and adaptive damping — stands as one of both SUVs’ greatest assets. Infinitely variable, it allows for a firm, sporty setup or a supple, compliant tune for long-haul comfort. In Trail mode, ground clearance rises by 55 mm, while all parameters — torque distribution, traction control, damping — automatically adapt to off-road demands.

The active AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilisation system, standard on both models, relies on electromechanical stabilisers capable of analysing conditions up to 1,000 times per second. In cornering, body roll is rendered virtually imperceptible. The electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential rounds out the package, intelligently redistributing torque between the rear wheels.

Unmistakably AMG

On the outside, AMG’s traditional design approach is preserved throughout. It all starts with the Panamericana-style grille featuring its signature vertical slats. The front bumper evolves with a slightly differentiated take. The raised “fender lips” remain, but now offer a more distinctive style — particularly on the GLS with its dual chrome strips.

Along the profile, wheel sizes run up to 23 inches. Body skirts wrap the lower bodywork to tie it all together. At the rear, the look is restrained yet purposeful, with a sportier bumper than the standard models and the traditional four exhaust outlets carried over.

An Interior Equal to Its Exterior Ambitions

The cabin strikes a balance between unapologetic sportiness and high-end refinement. The latest-generation AMG Performance steering wheel, available in Nappa leather, MICROCUT microfibre, or carbon, sets the tone. Upholstery choices span multiple Nappa leather options, including exclusive shades like pepper red and yacht blue, while carbon or brushed aluminium trim elements reinforce the dynamic character.

The MB.OS interface, displayed across three high-resolution screens, centralises all driving data in real time: torque distribution, G-forces, and detailed engine parameters. The MANUFAKTUR programme opens up even greater possibilities, with exclusive exterior colours — including Ireland metallic green and Côte d’Azur light blue — and interiors personalised down to the decorative stitching.
