Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its first-ever SUV equipped with E PERFORMANCE hybrid technology, the GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE. This high-performance vehicle is a marvel of engineering, setting incredible benchmarks in power, efficiency, and driving dynamics.
Powerhouse Under the Hood
At the core of this SUV lies a hand-built AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine, known as M139l, which is the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine in the world. This engine alone produces 469 horsepower. But the real magic happens when it combines with an Electric Drive Unit (EDU) on the rear axle. The result? A staggering system output of 671 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of combined system torque. This hybrid powertrain is designed for immediate response, rapid power delivery, and balanced weight distribution, enhancing both driving dynamics and handling.
Cutting-Edge Technology
The GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE is the world’s first series-production vehicle to feature an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This technology, derived from Formula 1, ensures a spontaneous response across the entire rpm range, elevating the driving experience to new heights. The vehicle also incorporates a 400-volt high-performance battery, specifically designed for fast power output and absorption, with innovative direct cooling of the cells.
Dynamic Driving Experience
The SUV comes with an array of features to enhance its driving dynamics. These include standard active rear-axle steering, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive, and AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission. The vehicle also boasts AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive adjustable damping and AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization.
Versatility at its Best
Eight distinctive drive programs offer a variety of driving experiences, ranging from serene pure electric driving to highly dynamic performance. The electric motor boosts power and torque according to the situation, and an Electric-only mode enables all-electric driving under certain conditions.
Inspired by Formula 1
The development of the high-performance battery was inspired by technologies used in Formula 1. With a capacity of 6.1 kWh, it offers 107 hp of continuous power and 201 hp of peak power for ten seconds. The battery is designed for fast power delivery rather than extended range, aligning with the vehicle’s performance-oriented nature.
Safety and Control
The vehicle also incorporates advanced safety features, including a three-stage AMG speed-sensitive steering system and a high-performance composite brake system with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and one-piston floating calipers at the rear.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE is a technological marvel that, for once, actually sets new standards in the hyper-powered premium luxury performance SUV segment.
