Mercedes-Benz ChatGPT Integration: Where AI Meets ‘Hey Mercedes’

Mercedes-Benz Ushers in a New Era of Voice Control with OpenAI’s ChatGPT Integration

  • Mercedes-Benz integrates ChatGPT into MBUX Voice Assistant, elevating in-car voice control.

  • Launching a U.S. beta program, Mercedes prioritizes data privacy in AI advancement.

Mercedes-Benz is amplifying its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its MBUX Voice Assistant, setting a new standard in in-car voice control. This innovative development utilizes Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, and is poised to make voice interactions even more natural and intuitive for Mercedes-Benz drivers.

Starting June 16, 2023, a beta program will be available for more than 900,000 U.S. customers, offering a testbed for this game-changing technology. The optional program, accessible via the Mercedes me app or directly through MBUX with the command, “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program,” provides users the opportunity to experience firsthand the revolutionizing capabilities of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT, part of the “Generative Pre-trained Transformer” family, greatly extends the capabilities of the already robust MBUX Voice Assistant. Unlike most voice assistants that rely on pre-set commands, ChatGPT leverages AI to enhance understanding of natural language, and broaden its response capacity. This advanced feature promises to deliver more comprehensive answers to a wider array of user inquiries, all while maintaining driver focus on the road.

Data privacy is a top consideration in this advancement. With Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, Mercedes-Benz accesses the prowess of OpenAI’s large-scale generative models, while maintaining the robust security and reliability Azure is known for. IT processes are managed entirely by Mercedes-Benz, with voice command data stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud where it is anonymized and analyzed. Mercedes-Benz prioritizes data protection, ensuring customers’ control over their information, and safeguarding data from manipulation and misuse.

Mercedes-Benz’s ChatGPT integration signifies a milestone in its dedication to place cars at the heart of customers’ digital lives. This integration aligns with the company’s AI principles, merging innovative AI solutions with a responsible approach. Insights from the beta program will be instrumental in refining voice control, shaping the rollout strategy for larger language models, and enhancing the customer’s relationship with their vehicle.
