The AMG GT Black Series will be a road-legal version of the next AMG GT3 race car.
It should be powered by the brand’s new flat-plane-crank V8 engine.
Sales of this high-performance coupe are expected to start in 2028.
Mercedes-AMG is working on the next generation of its GT3 race car, which means a new AMG GT coupe road car is also coming.
Indeed, the company has a history of making available a road-legal version of its GT3 racers, and the next one won’t be an exception, as the automaker’s CEO confirmed.
Speaking to Autocar, Ola Källenius said that “Sometimes you must allow the engineers to go crazy, and the next car like that is in the making.”
The car he is talking about is the next AMG GT Black Series, which should be unveiled next year before going on sale in 2028.
Since 2006, the Black Series badge has been displayed on the most extreme versions of various AMG performance cars, and Mercedes has confirmed that the upcoming car will be more powerful than the current AMG GT 63 Pro, which delivers 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
The result, according to Källenius, will be “insane performance” that enthusiasts are guaranteed to appreciate.
Few details are known at the moment, but we expect the next AMG GT Black Series to be powered by the new Mercedes-AMG flat-plane-crank V8 engine, which features a mild hybrid system.

While the performance division of Mercedes-Benz went all-in on plug-in hybrid powertrains with smaller displacement engines, such as the last generation of the C63 AMG, which traded its 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 for a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder paired with a plug-in hybrid system inspired by the electrified powertrains used in Formula 1 racing.
While the raw output was significantly higher (671 horsepower vs 503 horsepower for the V8), customers and enthusiasts balked at the idea of a four-cylinder under the hood of the most extreme AMG cars.
Combined with a rollback of environmental regulations in the United States, this led the company to backtrack and develop a new V8 engine to be used in models such as the upcoming AMG GT.
The automaker’s CEO was clear that plug-in hybrid models are here to stay, however, but his company will give buyers the choice rather than force this technology onto everyone.
Prototypes spotted testing on track show a long, low and wide coupe that looks quite menacing, with numerous air intakes, a large rear wing, side exit exhausts, and a massive rear diffuser.
More details about the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series could be released over the next few months as the automaker gets ready to fully lift the veil from this model sometime in 2027.
