The automaker teased this future vehicle on X (Twitter) earlier today.
Few details are known, but the vehicle should be unveiled tomorrow
It is possible that this will be a Nismo version of the Ariya electric SUV.
In a picture posted to its Japanese X (Twitter) account this morning, Nissan has teased an upcoming Nismo performance model that should be unveiled tomorrow at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Nismo is the division which takes care of the more serious performance vehicles sold by Nissan as well as its race cars.
While the image doesn’t provide a clear indication of what model might receive the Nismo treatment next, it seems likely that it will be the Ariya.
Indeed, an Ariya prototype wearing sporty wheels and an aggressive body kit has already been spotted testing on public roads in Europe, and the Chairman of Nissan Europe has said he wants to electrify Nismo and create high-performance EVs.
However, the same executive has also said that making a Nismo version of the Ariya would be difficult since it would have to offer substantially more power than the already generous output of the regular model in order to justify its status.
Since it appears Nissan has decided to take on this challenge, we can expect a Nismo Ariya to deliver more than 389 horsepower and feature a more dynamic suspension setup than current versions of the SUV.
The Japanese automaker would not be the only one to add a substantially more powerful version of its mass-market electric crossover, since Hyundai has recently added the 601-horsepower IONIQ 5N to its lineup.
We don’t know yet if Nissan will choose to compete with this model directly in terms of performance, but given that the reveal is expected to take place tomorrow, we might not have to wait long for an answer.
In addition to the teased vehicle, Nissan will showcase a few other models and concepts wearing the Nismo badge at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
