Polestar 7: A Compact Electric SUV Takes Shape for 2028

Polestar has begun the gradual reveal of its upcoming model, the Polestar 7, a fully electric compact crossover expected in 2028. The vehicle will be built on the new SPA3 platform, shared with Volvo, and assembled at the brand-new, state-of-the-art plant in Košice, Slovakia.

  • It is likely to be Polestar’s counterpart to the Volvo XC60

  • Electrification will be central to its development

  • Positioned below the Polestar 3, it should come with a more affordable price tag

Still with Volvo

The Swedish automaker confirms that the Polestar 7 will benefit from various Volvo Cars technologies, including a shared architecture, next-generation battery integration, and in-house developed electric motors. However, Polestar emphasizes that it will make specific adjustments to ensure the sporty handling and driving experience the brand is known for. That dynamic difference is real—especially when comparing the technical twins, the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3, which behave quite differently on the road.

A first teaser image from Polestar shows the vehicle’s silhouette under a sheet, revealing hints of a vertical grille, pronounced fenders, Thor’s hammer-shaped daytime running lights typical of Swedish design, and a prominent Polestar logo. The design promises to be both distinctive and dynamic.

Technological and Industrial Synergy

Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar, says that this partnership with Volvo is a unique opportunity to strengthen the brand’s presence in its home market, Europe. He also highlights that using the group’s shared platforms allows Polestar to access top-tier technology while keeping costs down.

On its end, Volvo confirmed that the Polestar 7 will follow an as-yet-unannounced new model in its own lineup, which will likely launch before the Polestar. According to Reuters, mass production of that Volvo model won’t begin until early 2027. However, it is expected to be an electric crossover based on the same SPA3 platform as the upcoming Volvo EX60, set to debut next year.

A Key Plant for the Group’s Future

The Košice site, still under construction, will become Volvo’s third production plant in Europe. A $1.4 billion USD investment will allow it to reach an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The site will host production of both the Polestar 7 and the new Volvo model, confirming a well-established industrial strategy based on resource sharing.

Volvo/Polestar Kosice Plant in Slovakia

Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars, stated that this partnership shows how both brands benefit from their synergy to deliver exceptional vehicles, each targeting distinct customer bases. He also mentioned the success of previous collaborations, such as with the Polestar 2 (EX40/EC40) and Polestar 3 (EX90). We don’t know yet when the 7 will be unveiled.
