Ram Cancels its Upcoming Electric Pickup, Renames Hybrid Ramcharger to “1500 REV”

The electric RAM 1500 REV will not reach production after all, but its name will be applied to the plug-in hybrid Ramcharger.

  • The electric pickup had been delayed by over two years already.

  • Ram cites slowing demand for electric vehicles as the reason for the cancellation.

  • The plug-in hybrid Ramcharger is still on track, but it will use the cancelled EV’s name.

Stellantis has announced it will abandon its plans to bring the RAM 1500 REV electric pickup to market.

Citing a reduction in demand for electric vehicles, the automaker has decided to pull the plug on its upcoming electric truck, which had been unveiled in close to production-ready form all the way back in 2023.

The same slowing EV demand had already prompted the company to push back the 1500 REV to 2026, and then later to the summer of 2027. In addition Stellantis had cancelled the long-range version in January of this year, leaving only the smaller of the two battery options.

Increasing competition in the segment could have also played a role in the electric truck’s cancellation, as since it was announced, a few electric trucks have joined the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T, which were the only models of their kind for a while.

Most notably, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV could have proven to be tough rivals for the electric RAM, especially since the smaller battery of the 1500 REV would have reduced its long-distance towing abilities compared to the General Motors trucks.

Combined with the return of the Hemi V8 engine in the 2026 1500 pickups, this shows the company believes it might have moved forward with new technologies and modernized products faster than what its consumer base was ready for under the direction of former CEO Carlos Tavares.

If Ford and General Motors can afford to take losses on some unprofitable EVs in order to better prepare for an eventual return of the tide, the North American arm of Stellantis doesn’t have the same resources.

Fortunately, the range-extended Ramcharger hybrid pickup is still going ahead for now, under a new name.

Indeed, Stellantis curiously decided to give their upcoming hybrid pickup the same name as the cancelled EV, which means that the “1500 REV” nameplate now refers to the former Ramcharger hybrid.

New name or not, the plug-in pickup could be the key for RAM to distinguish itself with new technologies, as it would have the only plug-in hybrid pickup on the North American market.

This model will technically be a range extended EV, as the 3,6L Pentastar V6 engine will never directly power the wheels, acting only as a generator to replenish the 92-kWh battery instead.

From what we know so far, this configuration should provide over 230 kilometres of electric range and the ability to drive up to 1 110 kilometres before having to stop for fuel or a charge.

The RAM 1500 REV Electric Pickup is Now Expected in “Late 2026”

This should make the plug-in 1500 REV better suited for road trips and long-distance towing tasks than the cancelled EV, while being much more efficient overall than the brand’s traditional combustion powered models.

Towing capacity for the plug-in REV is targeted at 14,000 pounds and the electric motors’ instant output of 615 lb-ft of torque should make exploiting this capability easier than in gas-powered pickups.

The electrified pickup is advertised as a 2027 model, and the latest details call for it to enter production in Michigan in the first half of 2026.
