Real-World EV Range For The Porsche Taycan 4S Is Far Greater Than The EPA Rating

A road trip has demonstrated the EPA’s 203-mile range rating for the Porsche Taycan 4S is way off.


  • EPA and Porsche have disagreed on actual Taycan range – Porsche keeps coming out on top.

The Porsche Taycan’s made headlines all through 2019 and continues to do so now. One of the reasons for the multiple banners was and continues to be range. Earlier this year, the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S received their disappointing ranges of 201 and 192 miles, respectively, or 323km and 309km. The latest Taycan, the 4S, has just received its EPA rating of 203 miles or 327km and a certain Matt Farah has just crushed this number while on a road trip.

The more affordable Taycan 4S, that shows poorly with its 203 miles or 327km range, even with the 93.4 kWh “Performance Battery Plus” option. By contrast, the Tesla Model S’ Long-Range car and its 100 kWh battery are EPA rated at 391 miles or 630km. Little more needs to be added why the Taycan’s made headlines for the wrong reasons…

Farah was recently given the opportunity to drive the first 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S in the US for a 24-hour period, and that he did. In his video, he chronicles the details of his trip from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and back. In the end, he ends up handily crushing the 203-mile range rating by traveling nearly 280 miles or 450km. Interestingly, the Taycan 4S’ “Performance Battery Plus” WLPT range is of up to 463km…

When he stopped, there were still nearly 20 miles of range left. He notes also that he did not try to hyper-mile the car – he used it as he would any other. It’s important to underline that this road trip was in southern California where conditions are always ideal, save for traffic jams. In Canada, at this time of year, results would differ but even so, we can’t imagine range would drop below that of 400km.
