Model would be first Forester hybrid in North America
Subaru does not currently offer any hybrid models here
Subaru is planning a Forester hybrid. The model is likely to come next year, the company announced as part of the launch of the redesigned 2025 Forester model.
“While the all-new Forester will begin sales with [internal-combustion] engines, a next-generation hybrid Forester will follow in another year,” said Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki (via Road and Track).
“This will be the first-ever Subaru Forester Hybrid,” said the exec. “It represents the next step in our new electrification plan, with more electrified models to follow quickly.”
Subaru did offer the Forester with its e-boxer hybrid tech in Europe, along with the Impreza and XV (Crosstrek), but the models did not go on sale here.
The Japanese automaker has been a bit behind on the electrification front in North America. It currently offers the recently-released Solterra EV and it has offered limited quantities of its Crosstrek hybrid and PHEV in select areas in years past, but these were low-volume models.
Subaru Forester competitors, including those from Toyota, Honda, Kia, and Hyundai all offer hybrid and/or PHEV powertrains. With Subaru’s marketing focused on the outdoors, a more fuel-efficient eco-friendly model seems like a must sooner rather than later.
As for the hybrid powertrain, Subaru’s e-boxer power is possible. Like that system, the former Crosstrek PHEV’s system used an electric motor located between the engine and transmission to provide an e-assist.
