Subaru confirms Forester Hybrid release by mid-2025 with Toyota-supported hybrid powertrain.
Combines 2.5-litre boxer engine, two electric motors, and AWD for enhanced fuel efficiency.
Marketed for US and Canadian buyers, retaining Forester’s off-road capability and rugged design.
The electrified model is expected to retain the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system while delivering improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Subaru revealed the timeline on its consumer website, though the final model year designation remains unclear and may be 2026.

The Forester Hybrid is expected to adopt a self-charging hybrid powertrain similar to the Japanese-spec Crosstrek Hybrid unveiled in October 2024. The system integrates a 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. One motor assists in propulsion, delivering an additional 118 horsepower, while the second functions as a generator. The hybrid configuration is powered by a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery for enhanced fuel efficiency without providing an extensive electric-only range.
The hybrid system, developed in collaboration with Toyota, improves fuel economy by 20% compared to Subaru’s earlier e-Boxer setup. Toyota’s input has contributed to optimizing the series-parallel system for seamless transitions between gasoline and electric power.
Updated Subaru Crosstrek and Forester Will Get Next-Generation Strong Hybrid System
Visually, the Forester Hybrid is expected to mirror the gasoline-powered variant, apart from a hybrid-specific badge on the tailgate. Spy photos suggest the new model will maintain Subaru’s signature rugged and functional design.
Subaru has opened online registrations for interested buyers in the US. There has been no news on the subject for Canada. The exact pricing and launch date details have yet to be announced.
