The 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV will have 454 km of Range and a 10-Year Battery Warranty

  • The Eclipse Sportback EV is a restyled version of the Nissan Leaf.

  • This model will be available in a single trim level, with an available tech package.

  • The maximum range is lower than the Leaf’s, but Mitsubishi’s warranty is better.

As Mitsubishi is getting ready to launch its first electric model in Canada since the pioneering i-Miev was discontinued in 2017, more details have been announced about the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV.

Indeed, the automaker confirmed some of the specifications of the sub-compact electric crossover, which will arrive on sale in October.

For starters, we now know that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV will be offered in a single trim level on the Canadian market, with an optional tech package that will bring additional features.

Since the Eclipse Sportback EV is a lightly re-styled version of the Nissan Leaf, it isn’t surprising to know it will be powered by a liquid-cooled 75-kWh battery.

Like the Leaf, the electric Mitsubishi will offer both CCS and NACS charging standards, with the former being used for Level 1 and 2 charging, and the latter being reserved for faster Level 3 charging.

This will allow the Eclipse Sportback EV to use compatible Tesla superchargers, making long highway trips more convenient across North America, since Tesla still has an edge when it comes to public charging in more remote areas.

The CCS charge port is installed on the left front fender, while the NACS port is on the right front fender.

It isn’t clear yet how the Eclipse Sportback EV’s single trim will compare to the Nissan Leaf’s three trim structure, but its advertised range figure falls in the middle of the Leaf’s official figures.

Indeed, Mitsubishi says its upcoming electric vehicle will be able to drive 454 kilometers on a full charge, which is closest to the Nissan Leaf SV Plus’ 463 km figure. For comparison, the base model of the Leaf is rated at 488 km and the top-of-the-line Platinum Plus is rated at 417 km.

In order to pull buyers away from Nissan and towards its showroom, Mitsubishi will need more than the Eclipse Sportback EV’s design tweaks.

Fortunately, the automaker can rely on its excellent 10-year/160,000-kilometer powertrain warranty, which will be extended to the Eclipse Sportback EV.

This means that buyers of the Mitsubishi will benefit from five years and 60,000 kilometres of additional coverage for the powertrain over the Leaf.

In addition, the same 10-year/160,000 km warranty will also cover the high-voltage battery, which is 2 years and 30,000 km more than the legally mandated 8-year/130,000 km coverage that Nissan adheres to.

Moreover, the Eclipse Sportback EV’s new vehicle limited warranty, commonly known as “bumper-to-bumper,” will be 5 years or 100,000 km while Nissan’s is only 3 years or 60,000 km.

Similarly, Mitsubishi will offer 24/7 roadside assistance for five years where Nissan does the same for only three years, regardless of mileage in both cases.

This means that depending on the Mitsubishi’s pricing, choosing it over the Nissan Leaf could be the better financial decision if you plan on keeping it longer than a few years.

Speaking of which, Mitsubishi Canada hasn’t announced the price of the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV yet, but the company said it will make sure its upcoming EV is eligible for the $5,000 federal EV incentive, which requires a purchase price of less than $50,000.

More information is expected soon as the Eclipse Sportback EV is due to arrive in about two months.
