The Upcoming Volvo EX60 Promises up to 640 Kilometres of Range and Faster Charging Stops

The Volvo EX60 will benefit from a new 800-volt battery architecture, allowing for more range and faster charging speeds than any other Volvo EV before.

  • The EX60 will be the first Volvo model developed on the SPA3 platform.

  • An 800-volt infrastructure makes it possible to add up to 270 km of range in 10 minutes.

  • The EX60 will be fully unveiled on January 21.

As only about two weeks are left before the new Volvo EX60 is unveiled, the Swedish automaker is releasing a few additional details about what will become the electric counterpart to its most popular model.

Indeed, we now know that this compact crossover will offer about 640 kilometres of range and much faster charging speeds than any other Volvo EVs to date.

This will give the EX60 significantly more range than the EX90, whose 499 km maximum range is currently the highest in the automaker’s fleet.

This increased range will make long road trips easier in the EX60 by requiring fewer charging stops.

Speaking of which, Volvo has also worked to make these charging stops shorter, reducing them to the same length of time as a fuel and coffee stop, it says.

Indeed, it should be possible to add up to 270 kilometers of range in 10 minutes at a 400-kW level 3 charging station.

While these fast chargers are not common in Canada, charging at one of the many 350 kW stations around the country shouldn’t take too much longer.

These charging speeds are made possible by the EX60’s 800-volt electrical architecture, Volvo’s first.

This architecture is part of the new SPA3 electric vehicle platform, which the EX60 will introduce.

To be used by all future electric Volvo platform, SPA3 relies on a construction that integrates the battery cells directly into the body’s structure to reduce weight and increase efficiency.

A proprietary software is said to be better at distributing power within the battery during charging sessions in order to speed up the process in all weather conditions.

In addition to its electrical architecture, the EX60 will also be the first Volvo model to be manufactured using mega castings, which can replace hundreds of smaller body components with one single metal casting. This assembly method helps reduce the vehicle’s production costs as well as its weight, further increasing its efficiency and range.

More details about the Volvo EX60 will be released on January 21, when we will also get a full look at its exterior and interior designs, which have only been teased to date.
