Toyota Now Recalling 1.7 Million Vehicles Due To Faulty Takata Airbags

Virtually all carmakers have been affected by the potentially deadly Takata airbags over the last few years.

The story is now an old one. The last few years have seen manufacturer after manufacturer issuing safety recalls related to airbags produced by Takata which, so far and based on available information, have been linked to 23 deaths around the globe.

The airbags use an ammonium nitrate chemical and are susceptible to exploding upon deployment, potentially hurling fiery shrapnel at occupants.

Toyota vehicles involved in this recall are as follows:

  • 4Runner (2010-2016)
  • Corolla (2010-2013)
  • Matrix (2010-2013)
  • Sienna (2011-2014)
  • Scion XB (2010-2015).

Lexus models include:

  • ES 350 (2010-2012)
  • GX 460 (2010-2017)
  • IS 250C (2010-2015)
  • IS 350C (2010-2015)
  • IS 250 (2010-2013)
  • IS 350 (2010-2013)
  • IS-F (2010-2014)

There are tens of millions of vehicles affected by this recall from a huge number of carmakers. The NHTSA has a Takata Recall Spotlight page which can be useful. All related information in this page is aimed at the American market. In Canada, the recall is not as intensive however many carmakers have issued recalls themselves. Transport Canada too has a page where information is available.
