- The Toyota TJ Cruiser concept was revealed at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show 2017
- It combines SUV style with minivan versatility.
- Very doubtful it will come to North America.
It’s quite unfortunate that the US and Canada will not see this vehicle in showrooms. Although SUVs are all the rage, a variation on the type could attract a crowd of potential buyers looking to move away from their parents’ vehicles. The Toyota TJ Cruiser is an SUV/minivan blend that has us thinking of the Honda Element.
The Toyota TJ Cruiser is built on Toyota’s TGNA global platform and is relatively compact as its length is 70mm shorter than Toyota Corolla hatchback. Being a box-on-wheels however means that it’s all cabin and thus quite roomy. The only real giveaway that this is not your typical SUV is that it sports sliding doors on each side. Otherwise, a quick glance towards the front reveals some semblance to the old and beloved Toyota FJ Cruiser – if you squint hard enough…
There will be three powertrain options: a 1.8-litre hybrid, a 2-litre gasoline, and a 2.5-litre hybrid. FWD and AWD will be offered.
We truly think something like the Toyota TJ Cruiser could find a fair amount of buyers here but perhaps it would be best if Toyota just built and sold the FT-4X they unveiled at the 2017 New York Auto Show.
