Volkswagen Canada’s Strategy Is Apparently To Overfill ID.4 Orders

Interest in the Volkswagen ID.4 is huge in Canada and the VW Canada wants more units to sell

  • Current reservations holders were informed of this by their dealer.

  • The idea is to sway VW AG to increase allocation for Canada.

From what we gather, there’s an ongoing campaign lead by Volkswagen Canada and its dealerships to overfill the orders books for the ID.4. The idea is simple enough: Convince Volkswagen AG to increase Canada’s ID.4 allocation because consumers in this country want to buy lots and lots of these electric SUVs.

The point of contention here seems to be with how many units VW AG has earmarked for the US versus how many are planned for Canada. Remember, the ID.4s currently making their way to Americans and Canadians (soon) are assembled at VW’s Zwickau factory in Germany. This plant is feeding the world which explains the limited allocations. That will change in late 2022 when Volkswagen will launch production of the ID.4 at their Chattanooga, TN., assembly plant.

The exact number of ID.4s planned for Canada, as part of the “first batch”, is not known however it seems clear that the intended volume is far from sufficient in order to meet demand. It’s obvious that the US’ allocation is considerably larger than Canada’s and perhaps the number of American hand-raisers isn’t as great as VW AG expected.

Whatever the case, it’s important to note that the Volkswagen ID.4 will be only be offered at dealerships in Quebec and British Columbia initially, followed shortly by Ontario. The remainder of Canada will eventually be supplied by Chattanooga. Given this, we’re extremely curious about the numbers…
