Volvo and Google Test Context-Aware AI Features for Future Vehicles

Volvo Cars and Google are using the EX60 to preview how generative AI could interpret a vehicle’s surroundings in real time and further change the driving experience.

The companies will demonstrate Google Gemini integration with vehicle cameras during Google I/O. Volvo describes the project as a world-first concept that uses Gemini from the car’s perspective, with driver permission.

The system is intended to help drivers access information outside the vehicle without relying solely on map positioning or manual searching. Potential uses include identifying road signs, explaining lane markings, recognizing landmarks and providing details about nearby restaurants.

Parking is one of the clearest examples. The technology could read signs and help explain time limits, permit rules, charging requirements or other restrictions before a driver leaves the vehicle.

Volvo said the work is supported by the EX60’s neural processing engine and software-defined vehicle architecture. The company is using the SUV as a test platform for future context-aware driving features rather than announcing a production launch date for the Gemini camera function.

The announcement also magnifies Volvo’s long-running in-car technology partnership with Google. Volvo vehicles already use Google-built-in services in several markets, and the companies are now exploring deeper AI functions tied to vehicle sensors and navigation.

Volvo will also be among the first automakers to add Immersive Navigation from Google Maps. The feature adds a 3D route view with redesigned buildings, tunnels, overpasses and other road structures to help drivers understand complex roads.

The navigation update will include more natural voice directions tied to visible landmarks, such as traffic lights or libraries, in addition to distance-based instructions.

Immersive Navigation from Google Maps will first be offered in the Volvo EX60, EX90 and ES90.
