2024 Acura Integra Type S Review: Be Still My Beating Heart

The new Acura Integra Type S is the best-driving sport compact car

2024 Acura Integra Type S Pros

– 2.0L turbo engine is a masterpiece.

– Styling is on point.

– Best-driving FWD compact car. Period.

2024 Acura Integra Type S Cons

– $55k+ is a lot of money for a dolled up Civic. I’m kidding. Buy one.

In my world of reviewing cars, it’s become rare for me to come across a vehicle that genuinely surprises and delights. What’s remarkable about the new 2024 Acura Integra Type S (ITS) is that I expected it to be awesome based on Honda’s latest FL5 Civic Type R and the previous-generation FK8 Type R. It wasn’t. I was better than that.

The Acura Integra Type S, more so than the TLX Type S, stands as the greatest beacon of hope for Acura enthusiasts in North America – it had to be. As someone who’s been often disappointed by Acura’s offerings in the past 15 years, I approached this vehicle with a blend of skepticism and hope if mostly because the new Type R left me lukewarm due to its timid and un-Type-R-like evolution over the FK8. Yet, what I discovered in the ITS was a car that not only met but exceeded my expectations, vaulting into my top three favorite drives of the past year.

Perfect visual impact

The Integra Type S, despite its shared DNA with the FL5 Honda Civic Type R (CTR), establishes its own identity. It marries the raw, driving-focused nature of the FK8 Civic Type R with the refined, mature aura of the FL5. This blend of youthful energy and adult sophistication makes it a car that appeals across age groups.

The design of the Integra Type S is where Acura has truly outdone itself in my opinion. The car boasts the equivalent of a wide body kit which is superbly coupled with an aggressive front bumper, striking a balance between audacity and elegance. I’m especially enamoured with the tacked-on plastic flares on the rear doors and quarter panels, and its wide, 19-inch wheels – this car is a stunner.

Inside, the Integra Type S is a haven of luxury and functionality. Equipped with a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 16-speaker ELS audio system, it’s got all the desirable tech. The heated suede sport seats and steering wheel add to the comfort, while the heads-up display ensures a focused driving experience.

A gem of a 4-pot

Under the hood, the Integra Type S is powered by a magnificent 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 320 hp at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm. A more satisfying 4-cylinder engine, there are none, not even VW’s legendary EA888 mill found in the Golf R. Power delivery is instantaneous, almost intuitive to the point where lag is non-existent and forward thrust is immediate.

This power is managed beautifully by its sublime manual transmission, which offers a level of engagement and precision that rivals the best in the business – I stop myself to not say that it is the best. To be clear, only a manual gearbox in a Porsche 718 or 911 beats it in overall feel and satisfaction. The car’s front limited-slip differential ensures that power is deployed efficiently, making every drive exhilarating.

The adaptive dampers are a key feature, providing a ride that’s comfortable yet dynamic. The ability to customize the drive mode to individual preferences allows for a tailored driving experience, whether you’re seeking comfort or performance. A such, the ITS is more comfortable than the CTR without given up an iota in handling or responsiveness.

On the road, the Integra Type S shines. Its steering is precise, the pedal placement is perfect for heel-and-toe maneuvers, and the overall driving experience is nothing short of a religious experience. Braking feel from the front Brembo brakes is reassuring and one of the reasons why one can’t help but constantly push the ITS through corners, curves, and down straight country roads. The Type S redefines what a sport compact performance car can be, offering an intimacy with the mechanics that is increasingly rare in today’s automotive landscape.

The reining FWD sport compact king

The 2024 Acura Integra Type S is not just a car; it really is the perfect marriage of styling and driving with a perfectly calculated dose of refinement and luxury. Despite my affinity for Volkswagen’s hot hatches, the fact is that Honda’s versions are more satisfying to drive as demonstrated by the presence, albeit too brief, of an FK8 CTR in my garage.
