The 2023 Toyota GR86 gets a new Special Edition package.
Painted in Solar Shift orange paint and black 18-inch alloy wheels.
Output unchanged at 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
The 2023 Toyota GR86 gets a new limited-edition variant for the upcoming model year, and it’s simply called Special Edition. The GR86, which is the second generation of Toyota’s pure sports car that started life as the Scion FR-S before becoming the Toyota 86, debuted for the 2022 model year.
The Special Edition package boasts an eye-popping Solar Shift paint colour, exclusive to this limited-run variant, along with black 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rubber, black rear pillar hash marks as well as an Ultrasuede and leather trimmed interior. The car also gets a GR cat-back exhaust system with stainless steel pipes and black chromed tips, which is said to provide a unique sound. Actually, Toyota qualifies it as a “deep, growling auditory signature.”
The 2023 Toyota GR86 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.4L four-cylinder engine that develops 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic. The automaker claims a 6.3-second dash to 100 km/h (6.1 to 60 mph) and a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 10.5 L/100 km (22 mpg) with the manual car, 6.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (6.6 seconds to 60 mph) and 9.6 L/100 km (25 mpg) with the automatic. So, the Special Edition’s GR exhaust brings no output gains.
The Special Edition package builds on the uplevel Premium trim, which includes a rear spoiler, height-adjustable and heated front seats with black and silver accenting, an eight-speaker sound system, alloy pedals and more.
As with the other GR86 trim levels, the Special Edition features electronic power steering and a sport-tuned suspension with MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone multi-link setup at the rear. The pure sports car’s stability control system can be set to Track to be a little more permissive during spirited driving without completing switching off that safety net. Finally, every GR86 is equipped with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential.
The 2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition’s price has yet to be announced, but the car will go on sale later this year. Only 20 units will be available for the Canadian market, and 860 will be offered in the United States.
