2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring Retains Range Record, Gains Power and Efficiency

Technological Advancements and Enhanced Performance Amidst Increased Market Competition

  • Retains top 516-mile range despite stricter EPA tests, adds efficient heat pump system.

  • Features 15-30% faster charging, improved motor and battery design for sustained performance.

  • Priced from $109,900 USD; faces competitors lacking over 400-mile EPA range, aims for increased production.

Lucid announced upgrades to its flagship 2024 Air Grand Touring model on Wednesday, enhancing the EV’s range, efficiency and charging capabilities.

The 2024 Air Grand Touring retains its industry-leading EPA-estimated 516-mile (830 km) range despite more stringent testing procedures recently implemented by regulators. It remains the longest-range electric vehicle sold in the United States.

Key improvements include adopting a heat pump system from the high-performance Air Sapphire model, which helps maintain optimal range even in extremely cold conditions. Lucid also innovated the motor design, battery chemistry, and thermal management to reduce wasted energy and sustain performance during spirited driving.

Another upgrade is a 15% to 30% faster DC fast charging capability compared to the 2023 model. Automatic preconditioning of the battery pack en route to charging stations enables the 2024 Air Grand Touring to charge at its maximum rate as soon as it’s plugged in.

“The Air Grand Touring has retained its 516-mile range estimate, achieving this despite more-stringent EPA testing,” said Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO and Chief Technical Officer. “More importantly, it delivers improved range and efficiency in a broader range of everyday, real-world conditions.”

The 2024 Lucid Air lineup consists of four models led by the Grand Touring, priced from $109,900 USD. The Pure and Touring trims start at $69,900 USD and $77,900 USD, respectively, with up to 419 miles (674 km) and 411 miles (661 km) of range. The limited Sapphire performance model tops the range with 427 miles (687 km).

Competitors like Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and others offer no EVs exceeding 400 miles of EPA range. Lucid’s advantage has attracted numerous industry accolades, including being named the 2022 MotorTrend Car of the Year.

Maintaining its substantial range lead will be crucial for Lucid as it faces intensifying competition in the luxury EV space. Production challenges have hampered deliveries since its launch, though the company aims to ramp up output significantly this year.

Still, Lucid’s ability to push the boundaries of electric driving range and efficiency gives it a compelling edge in the premium electric market. Whether that translates to sustained sales success remains to be seen as consumer preferences continue evolving.
