Massive influx of applicants for GTD Mustang
More apps coming as Europe site opens
Demand for Ford’s Mustang GTD supercar is phenomenal. The automaker says it has close to 8,000 applications for the car, and it hasn’t even opened up to potential buyers in Europe.
The U.S. $325,000 Ford Mustang GTD is the most ambitious Mustang Ford has ever created. It has a carbon fiber body, magnesium wheels, and a semi-active race-car suspension that you can actually see operate through the rear window. Projected to make more than 800 hp, it’s no wonder that the GTD has incredible demand.
Ford opened applications for the Mustang GTD on April 18th and closed them on May 20th. Fans and flippers who wanted one had to complete an application process that included individual order vetting. This is similar to what Ford did with the latest GT supercar, where potential buyers had to create a video showing why they thought they’d be good owners.
More than 7,500 people in North America submitted their applications for 2025 and 2026 model year GTDs. It’s an astonishing figure, 1,000 higher than Ford received for the GT in 2016. Again, this is from people looking for a Mustang that costs the same as a nice vacation home in most of the continent.
Ford said more than 20 percent of applicants are “from the motorsport community.” 25 percent already own of some sort of Mustang, and 20 percent claim they own competitor cars with similar performance levels to the GTD.
Now, Ford is opening up applications for Europe. We’ll get more details on that process in June. How many cars is the company building? It has hinted at 300-700 per year, meaning that there are already 7,500 people looking to buy one of a maximum of 1,400 cars. There will be blood, and there will be flipping. No matter how hard Ford tries to prevent it.
