Dual NVIDIA processors enable 508 trillion operations per second for enhanced safety and performance capabilities
Extensive sensor array combines with advanced computing to create comprehensive safety technology system
Free hardware upgrades for existing EX90 owners demonstrate commitment to continuous vehicle improvement
Volvo‘s upcoming ES90 electric vehicle will integrate dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin processors, establishing new benchmarks for automotive computing power when it launches March 5, 2025. The software-defined vehicle represents Volvo’s most advanced computing platform to date, building on the company’s Superset technology stack.
Dual processors deliver 508 trillion operations per second for enhanced safety
The ES90‘s dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration processes 508 trillion operations per second, managing everything from artificial intelligence-based safety features to battery optimization. This computing architecture enables Volvo to expand its neural networks from 40 million to 200 million parameters, significantly enhancing the vehicle’s ability to process and respond to real-time data.
The new model incorporates an extensive sensor array, including one lidar unit, five radars, eight cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. This technology suite, which Volvo calls Safe Space Technology, works in conjunction with the enhanced computing platform to detect obstacles in various conditions and activate preventive safety measures.
Anders Bell, Volvo’s chief engineering and technology officer, emphasizes the ES90’s advancement potential: “The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time. Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.”
The ES90 represents the second vehicle built on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture and Superset technology stack, following the EX90. This standardized platform allows for simultaneous improvements across multiple models through over-the-air updates, enabling continuous enhancement of features ranging from safety systems to battery performance.
Volvo has announced a notable initiative for its existing customers: the upgrade of current EX90 vehicles with the dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, provided at no extra charge. This hardware upgrade aligns with the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and technological advancement across its electric vehicle lineup.
The ES90’s software-defined architecture prioritizes regular over-the-air updates, allowing for ongoing improvements to vehicle performance and safety features throughout its lifecycle. This approach positions software, rather than hardware, as the primary driver of innovation and value creation for customers.
