Full-Size Pick-ups: Does Ford Really Sell More Than GM?

Every year, when manufacturers release their annual sales figures, we hear the same refrain in the full-size truck segment: the Ford F-Series is once again the most popular model.

  • True, the Ford F-Series is the best-selling model.

  • True, the combined sales of Chevrolet and GMC are sometimes higher

  • Since 2003, General Motors has dominated sales for 13 years, while Ford has had the upper hand for 10.

But is that really the case? Yes, Ford’s truck is highly sought after, but does it sell more than the TWO models offered by General Motors (GM)? And that’s where the nuance lies. General Motors offers two identical trucks in the segment: the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra.

However, when we combine the results of these two models and measure them against the F-Series at Ford, the picture isn’t quite the same.

So where does the truth lie?

Let’s look at some numbers.

For the year 2025 that just ended, Ford announced that just over 828,000 units of its F-Series found buyers. That’s good enough for first place. However, when we combine the sales figures for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, we arrive at approximately 945,000 total models.

That means General Motors sold the most full-size trucks in 2025.

In fact, when we go back to 2020, we realize that’s been the case. The gap is never huge, but always significant.

Between 2016 and 2019, Ford had the upper hand. In fact, between 2010 and 2019, except for 2015, Ford was ahead of the General Motors duo.

On the other hand, from 2003 to 2009, GM dominated full-size truck sales, except in 2004, when Ford was first.

Going back a bit further in time, data is scarcer and less reliable, mainly since model names differ at General Motors. In the years when specific figures are complete, we see Ford dominating one year, GM another.

And Ram? The model has been a solid third forever. In 1994, when the company completely redesigned its model, it got back in the game. Same in 2009, with another successful generation that even heated the competition. In 2019, Ram even outsold Chevrolet, but not Chevrolet and GMC combined.

The gap remains significant to close, but with time, who knows?

What we wanted to highlight is that we sometimes need to be careful with the numbers the companies show us.

We can’t blame Ford for using the situation to its advantage to promote its model. It’s fair game. However, it’s important to clarify things, especially when a trend is emerging, as seen with GM dominating since 2020.

We’ll see what the year 2026 has in store for us.
