2028 Ramcharger Expected to Share Hardware With Grand Wagoneer

The expected 2028 Ramcharger would give Ram a full-size SUV positioned against established Chevrolet and Ford competitors.

  • Ramcharger is expected to enter the full-size SUV segment for the 2028 model year.

  • The SUV could share architecture and Michigan production resources with Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer.

  • Our only concern is how it will be referred to: Ram Ramcharger, or simply as Ramcharger?

Ram is expected to get its first SUVs since becoming a standalone brand in 2009. In the near future, the truck company will grow beyond pickups and commercial vehicles with a new full-size SUV carrying the Ramcharger name, positioning itself against some of North America’s largest utility vehicles.

Expected for the 2028 model year, the Ramcharger would compete directly with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the Ford Expedition and Expedition Max, not to mention the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

The upcoming SUV is expected to have very close technical ties to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Both vehicles trace their underpinnings to architecture developed from the current-generation Ram 1500, although the Jeep application incorporates an independent rear suspension rather than the pickup’s live rear axle.

Production is expected at Stellantis’ Warren, Michigan, manufacturing operation, which has experience building Ram pickups and Jeep’s large SUVs. Sharing engineering and manufacturing resources would allow Stellantis to produce the Ramcharger without developing an entirely separate full-size SUV platform.

The Ram name could also help position it as a less expensive large SUV than the Grand Wagoneer. Familiar Ram truck grades such as Express and Big Horn could target mainstream buyers, while Laramie, Limited, and Tungsten models could push the SUV into higher-priced territory, matching Platinum and Denali trims elsewhere.

Powertrain details also remain unofficial. The underlying architecture has accommodated several Stellantis engines, including the Pentastar V6, Hurricane inline-six and Hemi V8 families. That gives Ram several potential routes for standard, performance and towing-oriented configurations. There’s even room for a range-extended powertrain.

A high-output SRT derivative could also become a reality. Similarly, an off-road Ramcharger Rebel could potentially draw from hardware already used elsewhere within Ram and include air suspension, low-range four-wheel drive, underbody protection and electronically controlled traction systems.

The Ramcharger name itself has considerable history. Ram previously intended to use it for an extended-range electrified Ram 1500 before changing its product naming strategy. Applying Ramcharger to a conventional full-size SUV would instead reconnect the badge with its earlier use on a large utility vehicle.
