Maserati MC20: The Italian Brand’s New Supercar Gets a Name

Maserati plans to go racing with the MC20 as well.

  • The Maserati MC20 will be the brand’s new supercar
  • An electric version of the MC20 promised
  • The supercar will make its world debut at the end of May

A new supercar will soon wear the iconic Trident logo, and it looks as though it will be quite spectacular. The Maserati MC20 will be designed, engineered and built in Italy, and will roll out of the brand’s plant in Modena.

MC20 stands for Maserati Corse 2020, signalling the Italian automaker’s return to racing, and the supercar also signals the beginning on a new era for Maserati. As a matter of fact, the company recently announced that all future vehicles will use hybrid or fully electric powertrain technology. No details have been revealed so far, but since it will be a race car, we’re expecting the Maserati MC20 to be equipped with a high-output hybrid system and a rear-wheel drivetrain. However, the company is also evoking an “electric version” of its supercar as well.

The company’s last race car was the Maserati MC12 produced in 2004 and 2005, which won 22 races through 2010, including three 24 Hours of Spa victories and 14 Championship titles in the FIA GT series. The roadgoing MC12 boasted a 621-horsepower (630-PS) 6.0-litre V12 developed in collaboration with Ferrari. The MC20 should beat that.

The Viale Ciro Menotti assembly plant in Modena is being retooled and modernized as we speak, and will include a new environmentally friendly paint shop as well.

The Maserati MC20 will be officially unveiled at the end of May.

Last week, Maserati reaffirmed that the next-generation GranTurismo and GranCabrio, which will be fully electric, will debut in 2021. Meanwhile, a redesigned Maserati Ghibli sedan should be unveiled this year with a hybrid powertrain. Last but not least, a new SUV smaller than the current Maserati Levante is scheduled to enter production in 2021.
