Aston Martin’s first EV will show up before 2030

  • The full electric line-up is expected between 2035 and 2040.

  • Aston Martin has two options for its first EV.

British-born Aston Martin may still believe in the so-called internal combustion engine (ICE), but that doesn’t mean it will avoid the transition to electric power at all costs.

In an interview with the British magazine Autocar, the brand’s new CEO, Adrian Hallmark, said he believed in its chances of returning to profitability, not least because the pool of potential buyers has grown in recent years. He is convinced of the brand’s potential, especially with the latest models such as the DB12, Vantage, Vanquish, Valkyrie and Valhalla.

He makes no secret of the fact that the move to electric propulsion is not as clear-cut as it was just over a year ago, but he believes that Aston Martin is now aiming for carbon neutrality.

According to Hallmark, Aston Martin’s first EV should arrive in the current decade, but hybrid variants are also planned. Let’s nor forget that the plug-in hybrid powertrain to be fitted to the new Valhalla comes from the Mercedes-AMG division.

The future looks very bright for Aston Martin in the electric segment, as it already has an agreement with another small manufacturer that has already made a name for itself for the right reasons, Lucid Motors.

Although ambitions are to launch an Aston Martin-branded EV within the decade, the automaker is not yet sure whether it will go down the route of an all-new model or rather a transformation of an existing model to bring itself into the exclusive niche of high-performance EVs.

Mr. Hallmark also indicated that he expected sales of combustion-powered models to occupy most of the sales numbers until 2030, while the goal would now be to go all-electric somewhere between 2035 and 2040.

The trouble is, at the time of writing, what form this very first Aston Martin electric vehicle will take remains totally unknown, but if we had to bet, an electric variant of the DBX would be a sensible choice.
