GMC has restarted work on a body-on-frame Jimmy SUV.
Report places Jimmy between Terrain and Acadia, aimed at midsize off-road rivals.
Canyon-sourced 2.7L turbo four appears likely; V8 seems unlikely.
The GMC Jimmy is reportedly back under consideration at General Motors. It was nearly seven years ago that we last wrote on the topic. The revival was short-lived as the idea was killed off mere months later. This time, the story seems to have more behind it.

Reviving the familiar name for what would be a body-on-frame SUV positioned in one of the industry’s most active segments would help GMC on many levels. The Jimmy would be both an off-road poster-child and an aspirational model, something GMC lacks outside the idled Hummer.
The traditional truck-based utility, as opposed to a crossover reinterpretation, target set includes the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, which places the Jimmy in the core off-road-oriented midsize SUV category. According to the report, the model would fit between the Terrain and Acadia in GMC’s lineup, giving the brand another utility entry without overlapping its larger three-row offerings.
The likely mechanical path is straightforward. It is expected that the Jimmy would share its architecture with GM’s midsize pickups, namely the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado. That would allow GMC to use an existing ladder-frame base already tuned for trail-focused trims and higher ground-clearance applications. The GMC lists the truck’s standard TurboMax 2.7L gasoline engine at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, making it the most plausible volume powertrain if the SUV moves ahead.

As there are currently no V6 alternatives, a V8 option would be an attention-grabbing aspect to the new truck, but also the least certain. GM has developed a new family of V8 engines for its full-size trucks and SUVs, and it seems the automaker is considering that option, which would require modifications to the Canyon’s package to accommodate it. ZR2 trims for both the Jimmy and Canyon with V8 engines would rock the segment…
The business backdrop has changed since Jimmy speculations faded some years ago. GM has refocused many of its investments into internal advanced-driver systems, leaving room for other ventures, and thanks to the White House’s deregulation of CAFE standards and the EPA, the timing seems right for all of the above.
Let’s not forget that Nissan will soon bring back the Xterra, Toyota has relaunched the Land Cruiser, and then there are the established Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. There are rumours of a Mitsubishi Pajero, and the Korean automakers are working on plenty on body-on-frame plans. The time for the Jimmy’s return is now.
