China Only: Ford Bronco New Energy— We’re Begging for Them

It’s not the first time — and likely won’t be the last — that we discover electric vehicles exclusive to China that we’d love to see on the North American market. A new model have just been revealed: the Ford Bronco New Energy

EV and PHEV — A New Breed of Bronco

The Ford Bronco SUV lineup get a new model— but sadly, don’t expect to see it on Canadian or American roads anytime soon. The all-new Bronco New Energy has been developed specifically for the Chinese market. While it looks a lot like what could be a facelift evolution of the small Bronco Sport, this version hides a new breed of engine under the bonnet.

It looks like a Real Bronco

Visually, the Chinese-market Bronco borrows heavily from its gas-powered siblings already sold in China — particularly the Bronco Sport. With its flush-mounted door handles, it could be mistaken for a facelifted version. But its physical dimensions tell another story: this is a much larger vehicle.

The wheelbase stretches to a commanding 116.1 inches (2,950 mm), matching that of the full-size four-door Bronco in North America and dwarfing the 105.1-inch (2,670 mm) wheelbase of the Bronco Sport. Overall length comes in at 197.8 inches (5,025 mm), making it longer than both the Bronco (189.4 inches / 4,810 mm) and the Bronco Sport (173.4 inches / 4,400 mm).

A lot of power

The most significant changes are what lies under the hood. While North American Broncos continue to rely entirely on gasoline power, not even an hybrid, the Chinese-market Bronco New Energy is available as either a fully electric vehicle (EV) or with a range-extender (RE) hybrid setup.

The all-electric version delivers 202 kW (271 hp), while the range-extender model — identical in appearance — pairs a 1.5-litre plug-in engine with an output of 241 hp (245 PS / 180 kW). On the down side, both variants appear to be front-wheel drive only, unlike all U.S. Broncos, which come standard with all-wheel drive.

The RE version features a 43.7 kWh battery, providing up to 137 miles (220 km) of electric-only range, or up to 758 miles (1,220 km) when combining the battery with a full tank of fuel. The fully electric version gets a significantly larger 105.4 kWh battery, rated for up to 404 miles (650 km) on a full charge. These numbers are under the optimistic Chinese evaluation.

As for curb weight, the Bronco New Energy is hefty. The hybrid version weighs in at 5,535 lbs (2,510 kg), while the EV variant tips the scales at 5,800 lbs (2,630 kg). That’s a far cry from the lightest Bronco Sport at just 3,500 lbs (1,590 kg), or even the burly Bronco Raptor, which weighs 4,945 lbs (2,240 kg).

More Details

Official images released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveal a roof-mounted Lidar sensor — something not yet seen on any Ford vehicle built in North America. Reports indicate that the Bronco New Energy, developed in partnership with Jiangling Motors, will be priced between ¥300,000 and ¥400,000 (approximately $56,000 CAD-$74 000 CAD).
