First Drive: 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland: My Mom’s Apple Crumble Recipe

Toyota has refined every aspect of the sixth generation of its immensely popular 2026 RAV4. Everything’s here—especially a now fully embraced mechanical hybridization.

  • The RAV4 2026 will arrive in January 2026

  • Only hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains will be available

  • Power is up, while fuel consumption remains exceptionally low

When you’ve got a winning recipe, you don’t change it. That’s what my mom always said about her apple crumble. In a creative burst, I once dared to tweak her ingredients and honestly, it was inedible. Stick to the recipe; it’s simple and always a safe bet.

You can improve one or two ingredients, but don’t touch the essentials. In the case of the Toyota RAV4, 77,000 units sold in Canada in 2024, you know the formula works. For 2026, Toyota introduces the sixth generation of its SUV while keeping the same list of ingredients, simply refining its strengths.

A bit of history!

The story of the RAV4 began in 1989 at the Tokyo Motor Show, where Toyota tested public interest in a compact SUV. Following an enthusiastic response, Toyota decided in 1991 to go ahead with production. Canadians finally discovered the Recreational Active Vehicle 4-wheel drive: the RAV4 in 1996.

Six generations later, we now meet the latest evolution of this crucial model in Toyota’s lineup. In 2024, the RAV4 ranked second among Canada’s best-selling vehicles, with 77,556 units sold nationwide. Globally, nearly 1.2 million RAV4s found homes in the same period, for a total of over 14 million since launch.

Toyota RAV4: In Great Shape as it’s About to Turn 30

Following its big brothers’ footsteps

Toyota’s SUV and pickup design language is clear: sharp angles and defined edges. The 2026 RAV4 follows the same approach established by the Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, and more recently, the 4Runner.

This sixth edition comes in three main stylistic directions. The base or classic versions include the LE, XLE, and Limited. In the same family, with slightly sportier bumpers, are the SE and XSE models. These core RAV4 trims feature a grille mesh directly inspired by the Crown Signa and 2026 Corolla Cross, maintaining strong family ties. At the top, the GR Sport adopts a truly athletic look: a “MATRIX GR” front bumper with a large black insert, glossy black exterior accents, and even a spoiler on the hatch.

For a more adventurous attitude, Toyota drops the Trail name in favour of Woodland. That’s the version I drove most extensively. It features a split-grille front end with integrated Rigid Industries fog lamps. Grey appliqués dress the bumpers—though made of plastic, they’re decorative rather than protective.

From the side, the wheelbase dimensions remain identical to the outgoing model. The Woodland sports exclusive 18-inch wheels with Dunlop Grandtrek A/T tires featuring a more rugged tread. Depending on trim, wheel sizes range from 17 to 20 inches. Note that both the Woodland and GR Sport trims have tracks 20 mm wider than the others.

On top, the Woodland features raised “pond-style” roof rails for a tougher look, while other trims keep a more conventional design. At the rear, the design disappoints slightly, it’s almost a copy of the Nissan Rogue. There’s some effort with slim vertical LED strips in the taillights, but the overall impression remains generic.

A smarter, more modern cabin

The 2026 RAV4 doesn’t just update its exterior; the interior evolves deeply to deliver a more technological, refined, and user-friendly environment. Toyota’s goal is clear: combine the functional simplicity that built the RAV4’s reputation with a stronger sense of modernity. The low dashboard enhances visibility, aided by the high roofline and generous glass area.

A more immersive driving position

Behind the wheel, drivers now get a 12.3-inch digital cluster standard across the lineup. Fully configurable, it displays driving data, navigation, and media info with smooth, clear graphics, seven layouts are available. Higher-end Limited Hybrid and XSE Plug-in Hybrid Technology Package versions also include a head-up display.

At the centre sits a new 10.5-inch touchscreen, or an optional 12.9-inch unit depending on trim. Mounted high on the dash, it’s easier to reach and far more intuitive than the previous infotainment system. It runs on Toyota’s new Arene software platform—developed by Woven by Toyota, offering continuous updates and smartphone-like evolutions. A big step forward.

There’s also a dedicated wireless phone charging and storage tray, cleverly designed and genuinely useful. On each side, prominent knobs manage the multiple drive modes.

A boost in ambiance and comfort

Toyota also aimed to upgrade materials and textures. The outgoing generation was notorious for its cheap plastics. There’s still plenty of plastic here, but more soft-touch surfaces in key areas for improved comfort. Depending on trim, seats are upholstered in fabric or SofTex, a synthetic material I’ve never liked much, as it doesn’t breathe well and gets warm quickly. The XSE and GR Sport add microsuede and SofTex for a sportier feel. Redesigned controls, ambient lighting, and smarter storage create a more modern atmosphere. A six-speaker audio system is standard, while nine-speaker JBL audio is available on higher trims.

Rear space remains generous. Comfort is improved, though the bench still lacks proper support. The Woodland test model offered only rear air vents and two USB-C ports as its “luxury” touches. On the plus side, the wide door opening makes it easy to install child seats or load kids aboard.

Cargo volume ranges from 1,036 to 1,070 litres depending on the sunroof, and expands to 1,994 litres with seats folded. The low, wide threshold is ideal for family use, Toyota hasn’t lost its touch.

Hybrid power everywhere

For its sixth generation, the RAV4 abandons gasoline-only engines entirely. Every version is now hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

Under the hood, all 2026 RAV4s retain the 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, now paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. The transaxle, energy management unit, battery, and key components have been optimized to reduce mechanical losses and improve throttle response. Result: combined output rises from 219 to 236 horsepower.

Two more powerful electric motors assist the setup: a 100 kW (134 hp) front motor for instant torque, and a 40 kW (54 hp) rear motor enabling AWD-i electronic all-wheel drive—now standard on all Canadian models. The system enhances traction and cornering stability while staying impressively efficient and nearly seamless in everyday driving.

On the road, Toyota’s hybrid system remains exemplary. The transition between gas and electric is imperceptible, operation is smooth, and efficiency shines in city use. Power is adequate, don’t expect thrills, but engine noise remains its weak point. The 2.5-litre still sounds coarse under heavy load. That said, fuel economy makes you forget about it quickly: during my spirited drive in the Woodland with its chunky tires, I averaged 6.2 L/100 km, impressive indeed.

The Upcoming American-made Electric Toyota SUVs will be based on the RAV4 and the Land Cruiser

Handling also improves, though existing RAV4 owners will feel right at home. The ride is more solid and planted, even with the Woodland’s 8.5-inch ground clearance. Steering is better calibrated and more precise. The RAV4 still can’t match the CR-V for driving fun, but it’s perfectly competent for daily use.

Naturally, there’s the lingering question about the infamous charging-cable issue, CableGate. Toyota claims the new battery placement now positions the connection more logically. It seems that particular headache is gone for good.

The eCVT transmission has also been revised for more natural engine response. Towing capacity for the hybrid remains 1,588 kg (3,500 lb), quite solid for the class.

Plug-in hybrid: more range, more power

Unfortunately, the plug-in hybrid version wasn’t available for this test. Still powered by the 2.5-litre engine, it now produces 320 hp, 18 more than before. Its 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery offers around 80 km of EV range, up from 68 km previously. A full review will follow, but all signs point to Toyota once again setting the standard in the PHEV SUV segment.

Conclusion

Toyota hasn’t reinvented the RAV4 recipe. This sixth generation keeps everything that made it successful while refining the formula. Making it hybrid-only is a bold statement from Toyota, at least until a fully electric version arrives. For now, the RAV4 remains a family-friendly, thoroughly satisfying SUV that hits every target.

The 2026 RAV4 will arrive in Canadian dealerships in January 2026. Pricing has yet to be released, but with the elimination of gasoline-only versions, expect a slightly higher base price. And in case you’re wondering, the Toyota RAV4 is built right here in Canada.
