Mach-E gets off-road tires and other dirt-stage tweaks
Newest Mustang shown off at Goodwood Festival of Speed
Ford is taking the Mustang rallying. No, not the coupe you know and love, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E EV. Ford launched the new Rally trim up the hill at Goodwood this week, and here’s what we know so far.
The automaker is saying only that the Mach-E rally will have “the freedom to venture off the asphalt and beyond the beaten path.” Those words are from Ford VP for EV Programs Darren Palmer.
It will be based on the 480 hp Mach-E GT trim, says Edmunds. The same report says that the Rally Mustang will get Magneride magnetic shocks as well as a lift of about an inch to provide some extra ground clearance.
We can see some details ourselves. Like the new rear wing as well as the WRC-inspired wheels that are wearing BF Goodrich Trail-Terrain tires. These tires are much more suited to the dirt than Mach-E’s usual rubber.
Palmer told Autocar that the Mach-E Rally was tested against “legendary heroes” of off-roading on what he called “rally surfaces.” Palmer said that “it’s super-stable on both Tarmac and other surfaces” because of the extremely precise acceleration control, and the low weight of the underfloor battery – which is given extra protection by a new bashplate.”
The Mach-E Rally promises to be more nimble and tossable for rally-style driving as well. Expect new front and rear detailing as well as some cosmetic tweaks inside to complete the package.
Ford confirmed that the Mustang Mach-E Rally would be sold in Canada as well as the U.S., and Europe. Expect more later this summer.
