Rivian Introduces Performance Dual-Motor R1T to Customers

Rivian has shown its performance dual-motor R1T to customers, offering a blend of power, efficiency, and affordability.

  • Performance dual-motor R1T model now part of Rivian’s offerings.

  • Model balances power, performance, and cost savings.

  • Introduction marks a strategic shift for Rivian.

In a recently held event, EV manufacturer Rivian gave a group of quad-motor R1T owners and dual-motor reservation holders the chance to test the company’s new performance dual-motor R1T model. This move is part of Rivian’s strategy to offer its R1 series in three different drive system configurations, with the quad-motor currently powering many Rivian R1T models on the road.

The quad-motor AWD configuration delivers maximum on and off-road performance, with 835 hp, 908 lb-ft of instant torque, and the ability to achieve 0 to 60 mph in as fast as three seconds. However, the dual-motor version, announced by the company last March, aims to offer a less expensive configuration with the same high performance.

Featuring Rivian’s in-house Enduro drive units, the dual-motor version has less overall horsepower (533) and torque (610) but offers a range of between 270 and 400 miles. As Henry Huang, Rivian’s senior director of powertrain and thermal, describes, the dual-motor is a product that does everything for most customers.

Rivian has also introduced a performance version of the dual-motor R1T, which fully utilizes the potential of Rivian’s Enduro drive units. It can deliver 829 lb-ft of torque and 665 hp, and tow up to 11,000 pounds in the R1T. The introduction of this version followed the removal of the quad-motor max pack R1T from its lineup last December.

Following a successful Q2 with 12,640 EVs delivered and 13,992 units produced, exceeding analyst estimates, Rivian’s stock has rallied. The introduction of the performance dual-motor R1T and the positive reception it has received suggests Rivian is on track with executing its long-term strategy.
