GM Sold 300,000 EVs So Far ; BYD Sold 500,000 Last Month

  • BYD has a broader lineup of EVs.

  • GM must consider a larger lineup to gain market shares.

The electric car has not had an easy time in recent months. Several negative reports on a slowing adoption rate have tarnished the image of the most logical alternative to the combustion option currently.

Yet the movement is gaining new followers every month, as sales of electric and/or electrified vehicles continue to grow, despite the flattening curve observed in the market these days.

In fact, General Motors has just announced that it has surpassed the 300,000 mark for electric vehicles sold in the United States, and has done so since 2016, when the Chevrolet Bolt EV took the market by storm. In fact, more than 370,000 GM electric vehicles have been sold in North America.

Admittedly, GM relied solely on the Bolt EV in its early days in the electric arena, a situation that lasted a few seasons until the arrival of the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC Hummer EV, two vehicles aimed at a more elite group of buyers.

Fortunately, the American giant has bounced back with more affordable models such as the Chevrolet Blazer EV and its little brother, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, while a handful of Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC and even Buick models are on their way to the North American market.

In the third quarter, GM delivered no fewer than 32,000 electric vehicles in the USA, a 46% improvement on the same quarter in 2023.

Meanwhile, at BYD…

There is, however, a downside to this milestone achieved by General Motors. In the month of October, which has just ended, Chinese manufacturer BYD (for Build Your Dreams) sold no fewer than 500,000 electrified vehicles, an increase of 20% on the previous month. It’s worth mentioning that these sales statistics include those for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and commercial models.

It now remains to be seen whether BYD or Tesla will be crowned EV champion in 2024. The American manufacturer (Tesla) remains in the lead with nearly 1.3 million vehicles ever sold, compared with 1.2 million for BYD.

But BYD’s approach of offering a wide range of vehicles seems more promising for achieving these impressive sales figures. However, we’ll have to wait until the end of the calendar to find out whether the Chinese player has succeeded in dethroning Tesla this year.
