Stellantis ends Jeep Gladiator 4xe development as electrification strategy shifts.
Production plans had faced repeated delays at the Toledo Assembly Complex.
Jeep plans to continue Gladiator production with new options and powertrains through at least 2028.
Stellantis has cancelled plans to produce a plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup, according to a company letter sent to suppliers on September 19. This is a shame as the Jepp pickup’s biggest flaw lies beneath its bonnet. The short-lived 3.0L EcoDiesel helped both efficiency and performance, but it too faced early elimination.
The automaker said development of the Gladiator 4xe is ending immediately, and all related supplier activities and agreements will be concluded.

The cancellation comes as Stellantis re-evaluates its electrification strategy. “As customers’ propulsion preferences for battery-electric trucks continue to evolve, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified Gladiator variant in the Jeep lineup,” a spokesperson said in a company statement.
The Gladiator 4xe was initially expected to launch in 2024, joining the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee in Jeep’s plug-in hybrid lineup. However, production plans for the hybrid model at the Toledo Assembly Complex had been repeatedly delayed, raising questions about the project’s viability. The plant also builds the Wrangler.
Jeep said it will continue investing in the Gladiator platform, with production expected to continue through at least 2028. The company plans to introduce additional customization options, factory features, and alternative powertrains for the truck, which is currently powered only by the aging 3.6-litre V6 engine.

Gladiator sales surged to around 90,000 units in 2021 in the U.S., but have declined in subsequent years. Sales were up 8% in the first half of 2025, following price reductions across the lineup. Sales in Canada are down 57% so far this year vs 2024.
Earlier this month, Stellantis also cancelled plans for a fully electric Ram 1500. The company is expanding its offering of gasoline-powered vehicles and extending the availability of Hemi V8 engines in some Jeep models, citing changes to emissions regulations. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said the brand intends to keep V8 options available in top trims of the Wrangler, though it is not confirmed whether the engine will be added to the Gladiator.
The market deserves a Gladiator 392.
