  • The event broke the unofficial Canadian record with 20 Mazdaspeed Miatas in attendance.

  • Enthusiasts came together, enjoying community, showcasing vehicles, and celebrating a beloved sports car.

A gathering to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Mazda MX-5 Miata’s debut in Canada drew an unprecedented turnout, breaking the unofficial Canadian record for Mazdaspeed Miatas in attendance. The event, held at Mazda Canada’s Montreal regional offices, attracted over 300 Miata owners from across the province, despite challenging weather conditions.

Organizers Benoit Lavigne and Germain Goyer, in collaboration with Mazda Canada, opened the doors shortly after 8:30 AM, earlier than the planned 9:00 AM start time, as enthusiasts began arriving as early as 6:00 AM. The crowd’s enthusiasm was evident, with participants braving temperatures below 10°C to participate in the celebration.

“We are delighted to have succeeded in bringing together several hundred enthusiasts from all corners of the province. It’s a source of pride to see so many cars of the same model, yet all different. We were particularly delighted to bring together so many Mazdaspeed MX-5s and original first-generation models. We’d like to thank Mazda Canada for the warm welcome on their premises and their close collaboration,” said the two organizers, reflecting on the event’s success.

The highlight of the event was the record-breaking attendance of 20 Mazdaspeed Miatas, more than doubling the previous unofficial Canadian record of eight. This achievement underscores the enduring popularity of the high-performance variant among Canadian Miata enthusiasts.

The gathering brought together Miata clubs from various regions of the province, fostering a sense of community among owners of the iconic sports car. Attendees had the opportunity to showcase their vehicles and share their passion for the Miata model, which has maintained a strong following since its introduction to the Canadian market 35 years ago.

To accommodate the early arrivals and provide comfort in the chilly weather, organizers arranged for a food truck to be on-site, serving hot coffee and pastries to attendees. This thoughtful addition helped create a welcoming atmosphere for the hundreds of Miata owners who travelled to participate in the anniversary celebration.

The MX-5 Miata has been a cornerstone of Mazda’s lineup in Canada since its debut, known for its lightweight design, responsive handling, and affordable price point. The model has undergone several generations of updates while maintaining its core characteristics as a driver-focused roadster.

The event’s success and the breaking of the Mazdaspeed Miata attendance record demonstrate the ongoing enthusiasm for the MX-5 Miata among Canadian automotive enthusiasts. It also highlights the strong community that has formed around the model over its 35-year history in the country.
