Mercedes-Benz Could Withdraw from Entry-Level Segments

  • The GLA crossover could be on the chopping block.

  • The brand could reposition its strategy with more expensive models in North America.

With the application of the Trump administration’s tariffs on this Liberation Day proclaimed by the American president himself, we can expect several affected car manufacturers to change their respective positions in the context of the North American market.

According to Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz is already considering withdrawing its most affordable models from the US market. The GLA crossover is one of the models targeted, as is the CLA 4-door coupe, which has just been redesigned.

The answer from the automaker’s American wing, however, denied this rumor, adding that it is pursuing its strategy of increasing sales of its popular models. On the other hand, other sources indicate that no decision has yet been taken, the application of customs duties allowing Mercedes-Benz strategists to adjust as the days go by.

Should the automaker decide to withdraw from this more accessible category, this avenue could be seen as a defensive mechanism against tariffs, but it would also represent a longer-term strategic shift. The Stuttgart-based brand would prioritize its larger, more profitable vehicles. Think of the GLE and GLS SUVs, both assembled in the USA, for example. It’s not the first time that more affordable models have been targeted by restructuring maneuvers, with the A-Class being one of the recent models withdrawn from the local market.

The industry remains on edge as the automotive sector struggles to adapt to the latest trade policies. The tariffs imposed by Mr. Trump, which were intended to relocate American jobs, have instead sown uncertainty in an already fragile global supply chain. In the absence of key details, such as the final list of auto parts and components affected, automakers are in a state of uncertainty.

Mercedes-Benz, which would be among the brands most affected by these new trade measures in the USA, will have to re-evaluate its plan, as will other car brands registered in North America.
