Nissan Halts Canadian Supply of Pathfinder, Murano and Frontier; Blame Tariffs

  • Nissan halts Pathfinder, Murano and Frontier shipments to Canada amid 25% cross-border tariffs.

  • 80% of Nissan’s Canadian lineup, including Rogue, Kicks and Sentra, unaffected by U.S. tariffs.

  • Infiniti to import limited QX60 volumes despite surtax, awaiting clarity on trade negotiations.

The automaker stopped supplying Pathfinder and Murano crossovers, built in Tennessee, and the Frontier pickup, assembled in Mississippi, to Canada in May. This is the result of Canada’s 25% retaliatory tariff on U.S.-built vehicles, which took effect on April 9 after the United States imposed a similar levy on global auto imports.

Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas, said the company views the halt as temporary. “It doesn’t mean we’ve stopped forever; it’s more of a suspension,” he told Automotive News Canada.

Nissan Canada spokesperson Didier Marsaud said the company had built up inventories of the three models before suspending imports. At the start of July, Nissan Canada held an average of 90 days of inventory for its U.S.-built models, with pricing unchanged since the tariffs were implemented.

Last year, the Pathfinder, Murano and Frontier accounted for about 13.5% of Nissan’s Canadian sales. According to data from the Automotive News Research & Data Center, the company sold 7,120 Pathfinders, 3,271 Muranos and 2,641 Frontiers in Canada in 2024.

Majority of Nissan Models for Canada Unaffected

About 80 % of Nissan vehicles sold in Canada are sourced outside the United States and are not subject to the Canadian tariff. The brand’s top-selling Rogue is imported from Japan, while the Kicks and Sentra come from Mexico.

Nissan’s global sourcing strategy has helped limit the impact of tariffs on its Canadian operations. However, Infiniti faces a different challenge. The brand’s best-selling model in Canada, the Tennessee-built QX60, falls under the 25% surtax. Infiniti plans to begin importing the QX60 in limited volumes later this summer.

Marsaud said the company has yet to announce pricing for the refreshed QX60, which underwent a substantial update for the 2026 model year.

Meunier expressed optimism that the trade dispute could ease in the coming months. “I’m very confident that the 25% tariff that we see today will become much less than what it is today,” he said.

Following a June meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, both countries are working toward a new trade agreement with a target date of July 21.
