Nissan will discontinue sales of its Ariya electric vehicle in the United States for the 2026 model year while continuing to offer the model in Canada. The automaker confirmed to us that the Ariya will remain available in the Canadian market, highlighting a rare divergent North American strategy as the company reallocates resources.
The decision represents a notable split in Nissan’s approach to the North American electric vehicle market. While citing resource optimization and evolving market conditions for the U.S. pause, Nissan Canada maintains its commitment to offering the Ariya alongside the launch of its redesigned 2026 LEAF this fall (which has been delayed due to battery supply issues). Nissan U.S. has not yet decided whether the Ariya will return to market for the 2027 model year.
Nissan’s decision to maintain Ariya sales in Canada complements in many ways the upcoming launch of the redesigned 2026 LEAF with Canadian pricing starting at $44,998. Canadian consumers will continue to have access to both Nissan EV models, with the Ariya serving the crossover segment while the new LEAF targets entry-level electric vehicle buyers.
The cross-border strategy difference is in large part a result of varying market conditions and regulatory environments between the two countries. In the United States, Automotive News reports that factors including import tariffs and changing federal EV incentive policies have influenced automaker decisions across the industry.
