RAM Debuts the 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle, the First Pursuit-Capable ¾ Ton Truck

  • The 2027 RAM 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle successfully completed tests at the hands of the Michigan State Police.

  • This version of the 2500 pickup comes with the 6.4L Hemi V8, 18-inch steel wheels, and a 4.10 anti-slip rear differential.

  • This truck is intended for police, fire, rescue, and emergency response agencies that need more capabilities than ½ ton pickups and SUVs can offer.

While American automakers have provided all sorts of vehicles to law enforcement and emergency response agencies in North America for decades, none had made a pursuit capable heavy-duty truck until now.

Indeed, the newly revealed 2027 RAM 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle is the first ¾ ton truck engineered to withstand everything police, fire, and rescue services can throw at it.

To prove its truck’s credentials, RAM submitted the 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle to the Michigan State Police for evaluation alongside other heavy-duty trucks and smaller ½ ton competitors.

These tests include 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h), 0 to 80 mph (129 km/h) and 0 to 100 mph (160 km/h) sprints, a measure of the average deceleration rate after having performed 20 full-ABS stops from 60 mph to 0, and a measure of the distance needed to reach top speed.

Speaking of which, the automaker says its pursuit-ready truck can reach 103 mph (166 km/h), a top speed that is limited by the tires rather than by the powertrain.

In addition, all vehicles tested by the Michigan State Police must complete 32 laps of the Grattan Raceway without major component failures in order to be eligible for law enforcement duty.

This 2-mile (3.2 km) track is located Grand Rapids, Michigan, and features 10 turns, including a 160-degree hairpin, a downhill reverse camber section, and a 3,200 foot (975 m) straight.

To meet acceleration benchmarks, the 2027 RAM 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle comes standard with the gasoline-powered 6.4L HEMI V8 engine and a heavy-duty 8-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission.

This powertrain is paired with a limited-slip 4.10 rear differential instead of the RAM 2500’s standard 3.73 gears.

Testing showed the truck can reach 60 mph from a stop in 8.41 seconds, 80 mph in 13.22 seconds, and 100 mph in 20.5 seconds, while reaching its top speed in a distance of 0.45 miles (0.72 km).

Other modifications from the base truck include 18-inch steel wheels, a transfer case skid plate, and dual alternators rated at 400 amps to provide enough electrical power for auxiliary equipment.

According to RAM, the 2500’s class-exclusive five-link coil spring rear suspension makes it better able to cope with high-performance driving than its competitors from Ford and General Motors. The 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle also reportedly bested its rivals in terms of tire wear after 40 laps of the Grattan Raceway, which should translate into lower maintenance costs in the field.

The 2027 RAM 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle will become available to fleet buyers in the second half of 2026, joining the Dodge Durango Pursuit, Jeep Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle, and RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500 special service vehicles in Stellantis’ pool of law enforcement-related vehicle offerings.
