Ram Launches a New ProMaster City for 2027

  • Stellantis will bring one of its European models as the new Ram ProMaster City to fill a space in the North American market.

  • This model will be larger than the previous ProMaster City and will be offered in both cargo and passenger versions.

  • This van will be built in Turkey, with a U.S. made 1,6L turbo four-cylinder engine.

Four years after having pulled out of the compact commercial van market in North America, Ram is bringing back the ProMaster City for the 2027 model year.

Indeed, Stellantis has identified a need in this segment, which has been left vacant by every player in the last few years, meaning that the new ProMaster City will be alone on the market once it returns in the first quarter of next year.

Ram expects the primary customers to be small businesses that carry out point-to-point deliveries as well as companies that carry out services within dense city limits, such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and telecommunications providers. In addition, a passenger variant will be offered for shuttle services.

Like its predecessor, this small commercial van will be based on an existing European model, but the new ProMaster City will be one size category larger, sharing its architecture with the Fiat Scudo instead of the Doblo.

This decision was motivated by a need for more interior space expressed by current ProMaster City customers, but also by a necessity to keep exterior dimensions within certain parameters to facilitate urban operation.

In practice, this means an overall length of 5,337 mm, a width of 2,248 mm (including mirrors), and a height of 1,947 mm, which allows it to enter conventional garages and parking structures, something that full-size vans can’t do.

Despite its 585 mm longer length, the 2027 ProMaster City keeps the same 12,8 meter turning circle as its predecessor, further helping maneuverability on tight streets.

Inside, the cargo version of the ProMaster City benefits from 4,899 litres of cargo space behind the front seats and a load floor measuring 2,743 mm (just under 9 feet). Thanks to a width of 1,218 mm (4 feet) between the rear wheel wells, the 2027 ProMaster City can accommodate 4×8 sheets of construction materials, as well as two standard pallets front to back.

Due to a squared off tumblehome, the van can also boast a very similar cargo footprint from the floor to the roof of the cargo area, which maximizes interior space and makes it easier to install shelving units along the left wall, which doesn’t feature a sliding door.

Speaking of which, the right-side sliding door measures 91 cm (36 in) wide and 1,2 m (48 in) tall. At the rear, two types of rear doors will be available, including a liftgate with a rear defroster and window wiper and two barn doors that swing to 90 or 180 degrees. This latter configuration makes it easier to load items from a dock, while the former provides a semi-covered working area.

Buyers will also be able to choose between side windows, metal panels, or a combination of both, depending on their needs.

In terms of design, the 2027 Ram ProMaster City has a distinct European flavour, which is not surprising given that this model has been cruising the streets of the old continent since 2016 as the Citroën SpaceTourer, Peugeot Traveller, and Toyota ProAce Verso. Starting in 2022, the same van has also been known as the Opel and Vauxhall Vivaro C as well as the Fiat Scudo. Iveco also has its own version of the same model since 2025.

The main distinguishing feature of the Ram version is its prominent script up front, which is the first application of the brand’s new logo on a production model. The LED headlamps are also different from the European versions, featuring horizontal daytime running lamps that are pinched together toward the middle, similar to those seen on the now-cancelled electric Ram 1500 REV.

The headlamps are purposely mounted high on the body to avoid them getting damaged in minor fender benders, which is also why the Tradesman trim level comes with black plastic bumpers front and rear. The same thinking was applied at the rear, with vertical taillamps mounted relatively high.

The more upscale SLT trim level, available on both the cargo and passenger models, trades a bit of this practicality for a more civilized appearance, notably thanks to its body-coloured bumpers and its alloy wheels.

Inside, the dashboard will feature a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital rear-view mirror on all models.

Cloth upholstered heated front seats are also standard, as are rear parking sensors, a speed-limiter, forward collision warning with autonomous braking, automatic high beams, and driver attention monitoring.

The SLT trim level adds front parking sensors and a wireless phone charger, while a heated steering wheel, a partition wall and a third-row seat for the passenger variant are optional. This last element brings the ProMaster City’s capacity from 5 to 8 passengers.

While the visual differences between the Ram van and its European siblings are minor, its powertrain is entirely unique in an effort to adapt it to North American driving conditions and preferences.

Indeed, in place of the diesel engines offered overseas, the Ram ProMaster City features a  1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that also forms the basis of the hybrid system in the new Jeep Cherokee.

In the ProMaster City, this engine goes without electrification, which leaves it to generate an output of 166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission on offer is an 8-speed automatic unit sourced from Aisin, which sends the engine’s power to the front wheels exclusively. This configuration was reportedly chosen to reduce mechanical complexity and provide for an unencumbered load floor.

While this output seems fairly low, the ProMaster City is rated to tow and haul 2,000 pounds, or a ton, and the gear ratios were chosen to improve urban driveability. An electric powertrain is available in Europe, but it won’t make it to our market, at least not at launch.

While the European versions of this van are manufactured in five Stellantis assembly plants in Europe and South America, the Ram-badged models will all come from the Tofas factory in Bursa, Turkey. Interestingly, the engine is to be manufactured in the United States and shipped across the Atlantic before making its way back in completed vans.

Given this foreign final assembly, the “chicken tax” should apply to vehicles imported to the United States, but Stellantis representatives have confirmed that this won’t be noticeable to the customer.

In fact, while we don’t have detailed pricing information, the company says it is targeting an entry-price under U.S. $40,000.

Deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2027, or about a year from now. While this may seem like quite a long delay between the model’s unveiling and the market launch, Ram says this is by design, in order to give commercial customers enough time to plan their fleets and find outfitters that can adapt the van’s interior to their needs.
