The rumour is not the fall-off-your-chair type but this could mean that the next Subaru WRX STI will be similar, but different.
We all know the good these two companies can do when they put their minds together. The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ remain as some of the purest driving automobiles available today. They’re also hard at work co-developing a dedicated EV platform and now, it seems as though the new generation of the Subaru WRX STI is next on the agenda.
The story, roughly interpreted from Japan’s Best Car website, goes a little something like this. Subaru was once dominant in WRC but they pulled out over ten years ago. Toyota is currently competing in the WRC with a Yaris. The two Japanese car companies have garnered a fair amount of experience participating in the World Rallye Championship and it is this combined love for the series and sport that partially fuels the rumours.
An all-new Toyota Yaris was recently released at the Tokyo Motor Show and may have been jointly developed, much like the 2nd generation 86/BRZ, by both Toyota and Subaru. A combination of Subaru’s powertrain including the FA20, found in the two coupes and, with a turbocharger, in the current WRX, could find its way on a co-engineered platform. As well, Toyota are seemingly jointly working on something call “Super AWD” which is certainly linked.
Toyota will be introducing an AWD version of the Yaris in the 1st half of 2020. It is on this car that will be based Toyota’s next Yaris WRC car. And it is this car that will serve as the starting point for the next WRX STI.
Details are somewhat confusing as far as chassis and powertrains are concerned but one thing seems clear. The next Subaru WRX STI will be a smaller car, harking back to its origins, and may even be offered as a coupe. So, a 2-door coupe and a 5-door hatchback WRX STI? Sign us up!
We are looking forward to finding out more about this car. Looks to be that the WRX STI will only show up around 2021 or 2022.
