Luxury SUVs are the ultimate status symbol. What’s more, nothing says you’re important than when there are accompanied by at least three of your best-looking friends. And this is something you’ll not be able to do in a Ferrari or a McLaren. But you will be easily fit five in the exquisite new 2021 BMW Alpina XB7.
As driving- and car-enthusiasts, we’d rather have a Honda Civic Type R or Chevrolet Corvette Stingray however and realistically, for luxury, capability, space, and true creature comforts, we have to hand it to premium performance SUVs. And while these large land yachts won’t exactly clip apexes like the Type R or Stingray, some are still really good to drive.
The large premium SUV is ripe with options including the Mercedes-Benz GLS, GLS Maybach, Bentley Bentayga, Rolls Royce Cullinan, Grand Wagoneer, Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, and one of our favorites, the BMW X7. As fans of the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, one that’s been given the Alpina treatment can only be extra special.
In short, the BMW Alpina XB7 is distinctive, fast, and obtusely comfortable; it’s damn near perfect. As such, is it the definitive luxury SUV? Let’s answer a few simple questions and find out.
Why you should buy a 2021 BMW Alpina XB7:
An Alpina-trimmed BMW is for connoisseurs, for those in the know. It’s as close to a bespoke product as possible without picking specifically the colour of the door panel’s cross-stitching. There are, however, about 25 different exterior colours, nine ways to get your Merino leather interior, and at least six different interior trim finishers.
Despite being a rare site, said people in the know will automatically recognize the Alpina thanks to the signature ALPINA CLASSIC 20-spoke design wheels which can measure 23 inches on the XB7. For the wheels alone, you should buy the XB7.
The Alpina XB7 is fed by the twin-power turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine which develops an uncanny 612 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. With the 8-speed automatic transmission, the XB7 thrashes the 0-100km/h sprint in only 4.2 seconds.
Never unruly or overly aggressive, the Alpina XB7 launches like a rocket with little to no fanfare. This is true luxury power.
The standard two-axle air suspension with Alpina-specific damper and kinematic set-up is the secret behind the XB7’s ability to be unbelievably comfortable or more dynamic than any 5,900-lb SUV should be. It’ll raise or lower the SUV by 60mm total for mild obstacle-clearing or improving aerodynamics at speeds of 250km/h or more.
Then luxury. Everything within the walls of the XB7 is precious, from the quilted leather to wood trimming without forgetting the incomparable blue suede found throughout. The craftsmanship is on par with SUVs cost twice as much or more, and the included tech and features are state-of-the-art.
The BMW X7 is achingly attractive. It’s powerful, chiseled, all the while remaining subtly elegant. The Alpina treatment takes the already singular X7 to a level on par with the most exclusive and expensive SUVs in the world.
Why you should not buy a 2021 BMW Alpina XB7:
The BMW badge. Though BMW is a revered brand, it’s not on par with Bentley and Rolls Royce. BMW doesn’t have the same cachet. Alpina on the other hand, does. But the issue is that it’s not as recognizable.
As strange as it may seem, at “only” $165,000, the BMW XB7 is not as prestigious as a $225,000 (to start) Bentayga or a $400,000+ Cullinan.
Despite the BMW Alpina XB7’s more “modest” roots, there’s little doubt that it belongs in the same category as the two British alternatives. As far as performance and opulence are concerned, the XB7 is on par or superior to the Bentayga. The Rolls may have a leg up when it comes to outright sumptuousness however it’s more than twice the Alpina’s price.
Of the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7’s countless qualities, I for one, appreciate that it’s not as pretentious as the Bentley and Rolls Royce. I’m also in love with the fact that Alpina is uncommon and not immediately recognized for what it is. This is why, at least in part, even without driving the Bentayga and Cullinan, I prefer the XB7.
