Should You Buy a 2026 Kia EV4?

There aren’t many fully electric sedans on the market right now, and the 2026 Kia EV4 is by far the most affordable. In fact, it has the mainstream sedan segment all to itself.

Is it weird that the 2026 Kia EV4 has only one fully electric passenger-car rival at the moment, namely the Fiat 500e? Is it a sign that EV buyers aren’t into sedans, being mostly parents that need a crossover to haul the family, or eco-conscious empty-nesters that prefer the convenience of the utility vehicle? We’ll see how the EV4 performs on the market and if it will end up being as popular as the now-overpriced Tesla Model 3. There’s also the Toyota Prius PHEV among mainstream sedans, which isn’t a full EV, but still electrified.

The EV4 competes with subcompact electric crossovers as well, such as the Chevrolet Bolt, the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Nissan LEAF, the Subaru Uncharted and the Toyota C-HR. And let’s not forgot the now-discontinued Kia Niro EV and the upcoming Kia EV5, both found on the same showroom floor.

Built in South Korea, the 2026 Kia EV4 is offered in several trim levels, including Light, Wind, Wind Premium, GT-Line and GT-Line Limited. They’re all equipped with a single electric motor that develops 201 horsepower and 209 pound-feet of torque, feeding the front wheels. The Light variant is indeed the lightest of the bunch with a 58.3 kWh battery pack, providing a driving range of 391 kilometres on a single charge. An 81.4 kWh battery is found in the rest of the lineup, for ranges of 552 km in the Wind, 515 km in the Wind Premium and 488 km in the GT-Line and GT-Line Limited.

An NACS or Tesla-type charge port is standard, while the max charge speed is rated at a convenient, but not spectacular, 109 kW for the Light and 128 kW for the other trim levels. A GT-Line trim with AWD is expected later in 2026, but might arrive as a 2027 model.

During our winter test of the EV4 Wind Premium, we managed an electron consumption of 18.1 kWh/100 km. Here’s the full energy efficiency and range data breakdown:

Standard features aboard the 2026 Kia EV4 Light include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, heated outside mirrors, dual-zone climate control, cloth seat upholstery, heated and height-adjustable front seats, a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, an intelligent key, adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, and a full site of advanced safety gadgets.

The Wind variant adds a heat pump and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, while the Wind Premium tacks on 19-inch wheels, a power panoramic sunroof, flush door handles, rain-sensing windshield wipers, wireless phone charging, simulated leather seats, a heated steering wheel and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The GT-Line also gets welcome lighting, power-folding mirrors, acoustic front-door glass, HomeLink, driver’s seat position memory, a driver reclining relaxation seat, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, ventilated front seats as well as vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability to power external devices. The GT-Line Limited benefits from some enhanced safety features, surround park sonar, a surround view camera system, remote smart park assist, a Harman/Kardon audio system, a Digital Key and ambient interior lighting.

In Canada, 2026 Kia EV4 pricing ranges from $42,144 to $55,394, which includes the $2,150 freight and delivery charges, the $100 A/C tax and the $899 dealer fees. These prices do not include the federal EV rebate of up to $5,000, applicable when the transaction price is below $50k, and any provincial EV rebates. The EV4 is not sold in the United States.

Why You Should Buy a 2026 Kia EV4

  • Simply put, the EV4 is the lowest-priced electric vehicle in Canada right now, about $1,000 less than the Fiat 500e and the Chevrolet Bolt. However, that excludes any manufacturer incentives. As examples as these lines are being written, there’s a $7,000 rebate on the Fiat and a $6,000 rebate on the Chevrolet Equinox EV.
  • The EV4 is among the most energy efficient EVs, and its 0.23 drag coefficient makes it one of the most aerodynamic vehicles on the market. Those two attributes contribute to the sedan’s excellent driving range of up to 552 km on a full charge. At a similar price, the 500e’s range is 227 km, the Bolt’s range is 422 km, the LEAF’s max range is 488 km while the Uncharted and C-HR boast a max range of 496 km. One-pedal driving is possible, allowing the vehicle to come to a full stop without touching the brakes.

  • For a compact sedan, there’s a lot of interior space for both front and rear passengers. The car’s unusually wide body provides good shoulder and hip room, while front legroom is unmatched in that particular segment in which there are no other mainstream EVs. Trunk volume is rated at 408 litres, among the biggest as well.
  • Kia’s infotainment system is very easy to use, with big button zones, lots of features and a large touchscreen in all trim levels. Another convenience highlight is the presence of many storage points, allowing us to pack drinks and snacks for lengthy road trips.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Kia EV4

  • The steeply raked windshield and rear window result in large pillars for added structural rigidity in the unfortunate event of a vehicle rollover. Those pillars crate noticeable blind spots front and rear, and especially at the rear.
  • The low roofline and low vehicle stance complicate entry and exit. Occupants sitting in the front passenger complained of a lack of lumbar support, with no available adjustments for that seat in the Light, Wind and Wind Premium trims.

  • This may not be a major concern for EV owners that aren’t planning on visiting DC fast charge stations on a regular basis, but the EV4’s max charge speed isn’t spectacular. Yours truly visited the same 180 kW fast charge station two days in a row, equipped with an NACS connector. On the first day, charge speeds didn’t exceed 55 kW, and the next, an extremely slow 9 kW. There are many variables involved in charge speeds, such as outside temperature, charge station reliability and genuine power levels, the EV’s general mood of the moment and battery charge level. The base trim level isn’t equipped with a heat pump, a nice-to-have feature for the winter season.
  • Subjectively, the EV4’s unusual exterior design looks athletic from some angles, lumpy in others, and the section around the rearmost pillar is busy. Inside our Wind Premium test car, the mint green accenting clashes with the multitone grey color scheme. Nothing wrong with standing out stylistically, and the EV4 truly does, but the sedan’s appearance may or may not please everyone.

Should You Buy a 2026 Kia EV4?

There’s a lot to like about the EV4. It’s fun to drive and energy efficient. Its cabin is roomy for four adults and its dashboard is ergonomically well thought out. It’s also affordable, as far as EVs go, but might need incentives to stay competitive against the Chevrolet Bolt and the Nissan LEAF. Shoppers also need to figure out if the sedan’s distinctive design is to their tastes, and we’d like better outward visibility to make daily commute a little easier. Moreover, the Kia EV5 will soon arrive in Canadian dealerships, offering more versatility at a slightly higher price point than the EV4, which could skew buyers away from it.
