Should You Buy a 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross?

As the redesigned Toyota RAV4 goes hybrid-only and moves up in price, there’s more breathing room for the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross to show what it’s made of. However, it’s not the most exciting subcompact crossover to drive, if that matters.

New vehicle affordability is becoming a serious concern for Canadians, and moving down from a compact crossover to a subcompact such as the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross isn’t a bad idea. Now that the RAV4’s base price has crested the $40k mark, it’s time for its small sibling to shine as the brand’s go-to vehicle for families on a budget.

For the 2026 model year, the Corolla Cross gets a revised front fascia, interior updates with a newly available 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with new paint colors and alloy wheel designs. Range-topping variants also gain heated rear seats and a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster.

The lineup still consists of the L, LE, LE Premium and XLE trim levels, equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that develops 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The L and LE can be ordered front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the latter is standard on the LE Premium and XLE.

Meanwhile, the SE Hybrid and XSE Hybrid trim levels rely on a 2.0L four, an electric motor, a 0.9 kWh battery pack and an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic, for a combined output of 196 horsepower and 152 pound-feet. All-wheel drive is standard.

Fuel consumption ratings are as follows:

2.0L I4 with FWD7.6 / 7.2 / 7.4
2.0L I4 with AWD8.1 / 7.6 / 7.8
2.0L I4 Hybrid with AWD5.2 / 6.1 / 5.6

During our winter test of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid, we managed a decent average of 7.2 L/100 km.

Standard features include LED exterior lighting, heated outside mirrors, 17-inch wheels with covers, heated front seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a seven-inch digital driver instrument cluster, an eight-inch infotainment system touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, automatic high beams, lane departure alert and adaptive cruise control. The LE and SE variants add 17-inch alloy wheels, variable intermittent windshield wipers, heated wiper park, remote connected services for 3 years, single-zone climate control, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, a cargo area tonneau cover, an intelligent key, an alarm system and blind-spot monitoring.

The LE Premium also benefits from a sunroof, roof rails, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.5 inch infotainment touchscreen and wireless phone charging, while the XLE piles on premium exterior lighting with fog lamps, a power liftgate, park assist with autonomous braking, remote and drive connected services for 3 years, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, an eight-way power driver’s seat, Softex simulated leather upholstery, heated rear seats and driver’s seat lumbar support. The range-topping XSE also gets a nine-speaker JBL sound system.

Why You Should Buy a 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross

  • Fuel economy is impressive. It’s among the best in its class among non-hybrid models, while the gas-electric Corolla Cross variants are unbeatable for sipping gasoline.
  • The Corolla Cross is plenty versatile, ranking among the best for cargo space, despite the rear seatbacks not folding completely flat. Although rear-seat legroom seems low on paper, the high seat cushions help being comfortable back there.

  • The Corolla Cross handles pretty well, thanks to its rigid structure that it shares with Toyota’s other small to midsize models.
  • The Corolla Cross is reasonably priced, in line with its rivals in the subcompact crossover category. The hybrid variants relatively affordable as well.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross

  • The Corolla Cross isn’t narrower than other models in the subcompact segment, and yet, it ranks among the lowest in shoulder room and hip room. It’s noticeable. Also, the rear seatbacks don’t recline, so occupants might not feel as comfy as they’d like on longer drives.
  • The hybrid variants may be affordable, but they’re offered at a similar price as base 2026 RAV4 variants, which are bigger and more versatile, just as fuel-efficient, but admittedly less equipped.

  • While we’re on the topic of equipment, the list of available comfort and convenience is missing some key items available on several rivals, such as ventilated front seats.
  • Not a big issue, but the Corolla Cross isn’t all that engaging to drive. At least compared to some other subcompact crossovers such as the Mazda CX-30 and the Volkswagen Taos.

Should You Buy a 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross?

From a rational standpoint, Toyota’s subcompact crossover scores points. It’s easy to live with, very fuel-efficient and benefits from a reputation of being reliable, which inevitably leads to strong resale value. It’s also better-equipped than before. We wish there would be a little more interior room, but cargo space is aplenty.

Emotionally, the Corolla Cross doesn’t get our adrenaline pumping, but that shouldn’t be a main purchase criterion for this type of vehicle. Simply put, there’s a lot to like here, little to dislike, and nothing to hate.
