Stellantis investing $13 billion across Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana plants over four years
Jeep Compass production shifting from Canada to reopened Belvidere, Illinois, facility in 2027
Prime Minister Carney pledges support for Canadian auto workers amid tariff-driven production shift
Stellantis has announced a $13 billion investment over the next four years to expand its U.S. manufacturing operations, a move that will increase domestic production by 50% while raising concerns about the future of Canadian automotive jobs. The investment, described as the largest in the company’s 100-year history, will support five new vehicle launches, 19 product refreshes, and the creation of more than 5,000 jobs at facilities in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.
The plan includes reopening the Belvidere, Illinois, assembly plant to produce the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Compass for the U.S. market. According to Radio-Canada, the next-generation Compass, previously assembled in Canada, will now be built at Belvidere starting in 2027. LouAnn Gosselin, Stellantis Canada’s communications director, confirmed the production shift but noted the company will add a third shift at its Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant to meet demand.
“This investment in the U.S. – the single largest in the Company’s history – will drive our growth, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and bring more American jobs to the states we call home,” said Antonio Filosa, Stellantis CEO and North America COO.
Canadian Union and Government Response
Unifor, which represents approximately 320,000 workers across Canada including thousands at Stellantis’ Brampton and Windsor plants, expressed alarm at the announcement. National president Lana Payne stated that Canadian automotive jobs are being sacrificed due to U.S. trade policies and called on governments to demand investment commitments in Brampton.
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded with a pledge to support Canadian auto workers, stating Ottawa will work with the Ontario government and Unifor to protect Stellantis employees and create new opportunities in Brampton and the region. “This decision today is a direct consequence of current U.S. tariffs and potential future trade measures,” Carney said, according to Radio-Canada. The prime minister added that the federal budget, scheduled for November 4, will include investments to build Canada’s economy while ensuring workers can seize new opportunities.
The announcement follows Stellantis’ temporary suspension of its Brampton plant operations in February 2025, shortly after 25% tariffs on Canadian products imported to the U.S. took effect. The company anticipated losing approximately $2.4 billion CAD in tariff costs for 2025.
