Tesla Model Y Tops Canadian EV Search Rankings

  • Tesla Model Y recorded Canada’s highest EV search volume.

  • Canadian EV searches increased 57% year over year.

  • Tesla and BYD dominated global EV search rankings across the countries analyzed.

Consumer interest in EVs continues to gain momentum in Canada, according to new research, which found online searches for EVs increased significantly over the past year as fuel prices remained elevated and governments continued promoting zero-emission transportation.

The study reports that Google searches in Canada for “electric vehicles” rose 57% year over year. The increase potentially coincides with the federal government’s Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which offers purchase or lease incentives ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 for eligible zero-emission vehicles.

The analyzed Google search volume spans more than 200 electric vehicle models across more than 200 countries between April 2025 and April 2026. In Canada alone, the 10 most searched EV models generated more than 3.4 million combined searches during the period.

The Tesla Model Y ranked first in Canada with 728,000 annual searches, followed by the Tesla Cybertruck at 485,900 and the Subaru e-Outback (which, interestingly, is not available) with 410,400. The Tesla Model 3 placed fourth with 378,500 searches, while the Kia EV9 rounded out the top five at 313,500.

The remainder of Canada’s top 10 included the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, Nissan Leaf, Kia EV6, Cadillac Lyriq and Tesla Model S. Tesla accounted for four of the 10 highest-ranked vehicles, clearly showing continued consumer interest for the brand’s lineup.

Globally, interest in EVs also accelerated. The research found worldwide Google searches for “electric cars” increased 168% over the same period. The Tesla Model Y ranked as the world’s most searched EV with more than 25.1 million searches, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 at 16.8 million and the BYD Seal at 15.3 million.

Tesla’s models ranked first in 75 of the more than 200 countries studied, representing approximately 38% of markets analyzed and generating a combined 71.6 million searches. BYD vehicles ranked first in 50 countries, or about one-quarter of those included in the research. The BYD Seal led the company’s global results and was the most searched EV in markets including the United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.

The report also identified Kia as one of the strongest-performing non-Tesla brands globally. The Kia EV6, EV9 and EV3 all placed within the global top 20, making Kia the only manufacturer besides Tesla and BYD to have three models in the worldwide rankings.

By country, the United States recorded the highest overall EV search volume at 68.7 million annual searches, followed by Germany with 44 million and India with 43.4 million.
