The BMW Group has Now Produced Two Million Electric Vehicles

  • The BMW Group includes the BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands, all of which currently sell at least one electric model.

  • Combined, these three brands have manufactured over 2 million electric vehicles since the first BMW i3 came out in 2013.

  • The two-millionth EV is a Tansanit Blue BMW i5 M60 xDrive manufactured in Dingolfing.

After about 13 years of EV production, the BMW Group has now manufactured its two-millionth electric vehicle, a Tansanit Blue i5 M60 xDrive.

This very car was produced in Dingolfing, where the automaker assembles most of its electric models, including the i7 and the iX. Rather than being sent to the automaker’s museum, this i5 will be delivered to a buyer in Spain.

While it doesn’t have as many different electric models as some of its competitors BMW was among the first traditional automakers to launch a modern electric model with the first i3 back in 2013.

At the time, the only other electric vehicles manufactured by “legacy” automakers were the Nissan Leaf, the Mitsubishi i-Miev (and its Peugeot and Citroën relatives), the Chevrolet Spark EV, the Smart ForTwo EQ, the Ford Focus Electric, the Renault Fluence ZE, Twizzy, and Zoe, the Toyota eQ, the Honda Fit EV, the Toyota RAV4 EV, the Fiat 500e, and the Volkswagen e-Up, many of which were considered compliance EVs.

At the time, Tesla had just launched the Model S, which is generally credited as the car that showed EVs could replace combustion-powered vehicles for most drivers.

It took until 2020 for BMW to launch its second fully electric vehicle, which was the first generation of the iX3, a model not sold in North America.

In 2021, the automaker added the current iX and i4 to its lineup, which were followed shortly by the i7 in 2022 and the i5 in 2023.

At the moment, BMW is working on the launch of a second generation of the iX3 SUV and a new i3 sedan, which will both be based on the Neue Klasse platform.

Of course, if BMW itself if the main producer of electric vehicles within the BMW Group, MINI and Rolls-Royce have also contributed to this total of two million EVs produced.

Indeed, MINI launched its first electric production car, the MINI SE, back in 2019, which was later followed by the Countryman EV in 2023 and the Aceman EV in 2024.

For its part, Rolls-Royce added the Spectre electric coupe to its lineup in 2022.
